Heard Over the Backfence
SACRAMENTO — American River College Theatre continues its season with Christopher Sergel's adaptation of Harper Lee's heart-wrenching, humorous and powerful "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Based closely on Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this American classic tackles issues of racial injustice and the loss of innocence when Atticus Finch, a lawyer in a quiet southern town, chooses to defend a black man facing charges of rape.
As his friends and neighbors turn against him, Atticus’ young daughter, Scout, learns lessons both sad and beautiful when she comes to his aid. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this moving story brought to life onstage.
Directed by Sam Williams, “To Kill a Mockingbird” features some of the finest community college talent in the area as well as set, light and costume designs by award-winning designers Kathy Burleson and Gail Russell.
From the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, productions of Sergel’s compelling and honest adaptation have played to sold-out crowds.
“We knew this production would resonate with our audiences and teachers, but it certainly surpassed our expectations,” said STNJ’s Artistic Director Bonnie J. Monte. “We are thrilled that so many students were able to attend To Kill a Mockingbird and experience the extraordinary power of the story.”
The play contains adult language and subject matter.
The play runs on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. starting Friday Feb. 24 to Sunday, March 4, with one Thursday night performance Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m.
All performances of “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be at American River College Theatre, 4700 College Oak Drive in Sacramento. Weekend parking is free in Lot D at the corner of College Oak and Myrtle, adjacent to the theater. Weeknight parking is $1. Ticket prices are $12 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors and SARTA members.
For tickets and information call the box office at 916-484-8234 or e-mail boxoffice@arc.losrios.edu or visit seatyourself.biz/arctheatre.

Herbert Green teacher Suzanne Graham wanted an interesting and creative way to help her struggling readers improve their academic skills. Her idea came from an unlikely source: butterflies. With support from a local grant with the Innovations in Environmental Education (IEE) Fund, Graham brought the Butterfly Bridges project to life.
The Butterfly Bridges Project links students from Herbert Green Middle School and Indian Creek Elementary.
Graham’s middle school students are English language learners; students learning English as a second or sometimes third language. To practice their reading and writing skills, they have conducted extensive research on butterfly biology and their habitat.
They have spent time outdoors observing and recording butterfly behavior. With this research, the students are creating lesson plans and will present them to kindergarten classes at Indian Creek Elementary.
In the process, these middle school students will gain academic skills and establish a connection with their social, academic and environmental communities.
Butterfly Bridges is one of several projects funded over the past four years by the Innovations in Environmental Education Fund. Administered by the American River Conservancy, the IEE Fund supports El Dorado County teachers in implementing innovative environmental education projects which foster appreciation for watersheds, habitat and environment in a manner that protects the natural resources and beauties this area.
The IEE Fund favors proposals that stress interaction with human communities and take place outside the classroom walls.
The IEE Fund is currently accepting applications from educators in El Dorado County, including South Lake Tahoe schools.
Teachers, administrators and parent volunteers are encouraged to submit a full grant proposal by Friday, Feb. 24.
Awards will be announced March 9. Another round of grant applications will be accepted in the fall.
Applications and additional details are available online at arconservancy.org/innovations or contact Michael Dotson, environmental education program manager, at the American River Conservancy at 530-621-1224.

The Capay Valley Almond Festival began in 1915 and has been a Northern California tradition.
The only five-town event in Northern California, the festival is a showcase of the Esparto/Capay Valley Region. It began in the fall after the harvest and moved years later to the spring, in order to show off the lovely blossoms.
In recent years the festival has received large amounts of rain and wind and this year the festival is Sunday, March 11.
The almond tree is the most mysterious nut tree and is mentioned in the Bible in the book of Numbers 17:8. Its crop is very valuable to California and California is the only place in North America that grows almonds commercially.
A $2 billion industry, more than 6,000 growers devote an estimated 530,000 acres in the Central Valley to almonds — California’s largest tree nut crop — in a stretch of land extending from below Bakersfield in the south to Red Bluff in the north.
For more information about almonds and recipes go to almondboard.com.
The Capay Valley Almond Festival 2012 will be in the towns of Esparto, Capay, Brooks, Guinda and Rumsey.
