Responders from the Pioneer Fire Protection District — including Chief Bob Gill and volunteer firefighter Phil Dayton — were first on the scene during for the rescue attempt.
Also, no hoist was used by the California Highway Patrol H-20 helicopter. Rather, one of the aircraft’s skids was placed on a boulder and emergency crews were able to assist the injured kayaker on board.
