Key facts in the “River rescue saves South County kayaker” story from the Monday, June 26, edition of the Mountain Democrat were not known until after press time.

Responders from the Pioneer Fire Protection District — including Chief Bob Gill and volunteer firefighter Phil Dayton — were first on the scene during for the rescue attempt.

Also, no hoist was used by the California Highway Patrol H-20 helicopter. Rather, one of the aircraft’s skids was placed on a boulder and emergency crews were able to assist the injured kayaker on board.
