Mckinley Arts and Culture Center announces Christina Massey exhibition

Christina Massey, former El Dorado County resident, is exhibiting her work at McKinley Arts Camp: Culture Center, West Gallery, 
925 Riverside Drive in 
Reno, Nev.

The show titled "An Art Community" runs Dec. 13 to Jan. 28.

Massey grew up in Cameron Park and now resides in Brooklyn, N.Y. and has been exhibiting frequently in the New York City metropolitan area.

The works in Reno are created by weaving cuttings and scraps of multiple paintings and/or prints that had originally been created to exist on their own. Each piece has been named after a neighborhood of Brooklyn and generally represents the ethnic make up of those communities at this moment in time.

True to the ethnic make up of most communities however, no one piece is made of entirely one canvas, and the interwoven structure of the scraps of paintings would collapse with out the support of the others.

"An Art Community" connects people, by comparing their similarities in the situations of gentrification, race and community. By the work being simultaneously specific and literal as well as abstract and conceptual, "An Art Community" challenges the notions of permanence, connections and identification from place, Massey said.

This is her first solo exhibition in the region since leaving California in 2002.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

Christina Massey attended Chico State University where she studied painting, printmaking and theater set design. Through various series of paintings and painting based installations she uses word play and theatrics to communicate opinions about general political topics that ultimately define observations about the art world itself.

The McKinley Arts and Cultural Center is at the former McKinley Park School. It was constructed in 1910 and renovated in 1999.
