The Upstairs Art Gallery, 420 Main St. in Placerville, is featuring the oil paintings of Shirley Manfredi on Saturday, Oct. 15, during Placerville Downtown Association’s Art and Wine Festival.

The opening reception runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Meet the artist and view her new work of figurative paintings. Manfredi’s work has a wonderful contemporary feel, great range of technical skill and is as vigorous and colorful as ever.

Manfredi gains her inspiration by direct observation from the people and events of daily life and experiences from her travels. Responding to those images, she composes a visual narration.

These new paintings have a story to tell through the depiction of street scenes, cafés, trains, musicians or entertainers. As the painting evolves, bits of visual information have been incorporated to present a dialogue with the viewer and offer an intimate glimpse of the subject rendered.

Last year, Maria Medua, director of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's Artists Gallery, selected Manfredi’s work for a second place award at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. Manfredi has also received in 2010 a jurors special mention from the exhibition “Arts on Fire XIV” at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica. The juror Philip E. Linhares of Oakland Museum’s Chief Curator of Art selected Manfredi’s work for this special award.

Manfredi’s work will be on view from Saturday, Oct. 15 to Saturday, Dec. 10.

My family came from Sacramento to see Shirley Manfredi's exhibit. We have had the good fortune to see several of her shows, and she is clearly surpassing her previous successes with every new work! This show is a "must see!"
