Second Amendment

EDITOR:

In response to Chris Daley’s Dec. 28 Opinion page column:

You quoted the Second Amendment correctly. However, like all good liberals you took part of the Second Amendment out of context and added your own interpretation to the statement, “A well regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state…” To you, that sounded like the founding fathers intended gun owners to be members of a state or local militia and that you would be OK with that. However, after reading the full Second Amendment a couple of times, this is what I discovered. After “free state” there is a comma, not a period, which is used to indicate a slight pause.

…the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed (to destroy or hinder). And what part of infringed do you not understand? What does it sound like after reading it in full context? If history is correct there was no state militia; only local people who made up the civilian militia who fought the redcoats. By the way, the British started the revolution by attempting to take the arms and ammunition from the “people.” There was no government to raise taxes to pay for a standing army; there were just the people who were willing to sacrifice their lives and their future to remain free and not be subservient to the British.

Anyway, I bet your brother, the Conservative, will agree with me? Also, I bet you put this in your column just to pull our chains out there, knowing you would get a response like mine.

I always enjoy yours and Wendy’s columns, I just don’t agree with you guys on this one.

There is also in the CONSTITUTION...(BEFORE the 2nd Amended part) Article 1 Section 8. The Congress shall have power -- ....... "To provide for calling forth the militia to EXECUTE the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections, and repel invasions."...... The government didn't have enough money to support a MILITIA (Federation Papers written 1786) so the people needed to keep arms to protect the Union..... NOT FIGHT the UNION or blow-up a movie theater or kill 20-1st graders ..... Oh Lord, I wish they taught HISTORY in our schools....

The founding fathers were speaking of muskets. They had no idea where we would be today in terms of modern weapons. I own firearms. I fully support background checks, regulations etc. I am also not delusional enough to think this will prevent bad guys from doing bad things. But I have no problem tracking guns and gun sales. This country is severely screwed up in the head anyway. People freak about nudity and sex, but glorify violence at every turn. America has a deep psychoses.

Mentioning that Americans freak out about nudity and sex, but less so about violence, made me remember when in Berlin we attempted to take our son into the movie Jaws. I thought the management was going to call the Police. They said children would NOT be exposed to the violence of Jaws. Yet, in Germany you can take children into sex shows. Just shows that societies have different values and rules. (No, I didn't take my son into sex shows in Germany).

Thinking that the German adversion to exposing their children to violence probably stems from their WWII activities. Just my guess.

The founding fathers had foresight, but don't know if it reached 237 years into the future. I wonder how our decisions today (2013) will hold up in 2250.

Herm, why is it according to you far right Republicans, liberals always take the second amendment out of context? All the rights in the Constitution have always been interpreted as not being absolute, especially when weighed against the public safety and the rights of others. If certain firearms pose enough of a danger to society by their mere availability, then they will be removed, constitutionally. It’s the NRA whose credibility is now being questioned when their leadership supported by the 90 million dollar a year gun industries preaches to its members that "the goal of people like Obama is quite clearly to destroy the second amendment and ban private ownership of firearms,” not even George Bush was stupid enough to believe this.

Richurd is taking the entire constitution out of context. The rights mentioned therein are not granted by the Document itself, but by the Creator; "Men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights" meaning these rights cannot be separated from those to whom they are endowed. The gubmint didn't give 'em and the gubmint can't take 'em away. The Constitution didn't say "the people shall have the right to keep and bear arms...". It mentions this right as preexisting and recognizes the sovereignty of the right. My context is bigger than your context, Richurd.

Not only is he a registered democrat, in a FB posting, he praises the honorable (sic) Diane Feinstein by saying "Sen. Feinstein, you are doing the right thing in leading the re-institution of a national AWB". SO there you have it...another lefty gone off the deep end. Based on the history of mass shootings lately, a background check that simply determines the political affiliation of the gun buyer and rules out lefties may prevent lots of what we have seen. Truth?

Wow, it took you this long to figure out that he is a liberal. Congratulations, Sherlock. What tipped you off? The fact that he plastered it all over his manifesto? Nothing gets by you. The fact remains, liberal or conservative, that you bunch of paranoid nutbags are certain that the big bad government is coming to enslave you and that you better keep your guns ready so you can make a stand and go out in a blaze of glory. Yes, this guy is a liberal, but he subscribes to your paranoia and mental sickness, just from the other end of the spectrum. Can you understand that? Probably not, sadly.

Okay boys, let's go through this slowly; "Yes, this guy is a liberal, but he subscribes to your paranoia and mental sickness, just from the other end of the spectrum". His problem (as is yours) is that he is #1) a liberal #2) a very unstable guy. 100 million other gun owners did NOT kill anyone today. Comprendes? His "paranoia" is ABOUT gun owners, who have done nothing to him to start with. Your attempt to align this cuckoo with the average conservative gun owner is plain silly. The more you talk, the more you make other gun-phobe lefties look even worse, so stop already.

Shepp & Cas: What is your precise point? My ONLY point remains that nobody on this forum is advocating random acts of violence. As for the recent shootings, I know nothing about the shooter's (irrelevant) political proclivities. Purportedly, he wrote an 11,349 word document -- 17 pages, when put into Word. It is a rambling lot of nonsense, hardly constituting a "Manifesto". There's no way of knowing WHO wrote it, WHEN it was written, WHY it was written, on WHAT DATE it was written, or for WHAT PURPOSE. One could as just as well anonymously post a restyled Communist Manifesto, attributing to some poor sucker.

What do you call it when a gun club feels they should have unrestricted access to weapons that have no place in our society? What do you call a gun club that’s convinced its membership that it’s their divine right to have those weapons? What do you call it when a gun club lies to its membership and spends million to defeat those in public office who support gun control in the name of , “freedom and the rights of law abiding Americans to own guns." What do you call a gun club who feels that if laws are passed to restrict assault weapons they will wage war on America because, “it’s their birth right confirmed by the Constitution to have those guns. What do you call a gun club whose interpretation of the Second Amendment seems to put it to the right of not only most Americans, including most gun owners, but also the Roberts Supreme Court and even Justice Antonin Scalia, the most conservative of the justices. I would call it not a gun club but closer to an extremist group such as the one that helped inspire America’s worst act of domestic terrorism.

But if a disgruntled LA cop who has been driven over the edge by his perception that government employees have conspired against him, why, he is "unbalanced". Nice try, kids. The "Manifesto" has gems like: "Tebow, I really wanted to see you take charge of an offense again and the game. Get your guns NRA Patriots, their coming; What do you get when you combine the president's ability to secretly kill American citizens and the recent push to restrict gun access? One of the most bizarre anti-Obama conspiracy theories ever—and it takes a lot to win that prize. Various tea party activists, libertarian websites and other conspiracy-minded Obama haters are claiming that Russian security forces have discovered that Obama is about to unleash "death squads" across America to assassinate defenders of the Second Amendment. According to Liberty.com, one of the sites perpetuating this latest story, Russian intelligence has outlined the whole nefarious plot in a memo for President Vladimir Putin, detailing the Obama's administration's dispatch of "VIPER teams...which is the acronym for Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response Team, a programme run by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and whose agents terrify millions of Americans with Nazi-like Gestapo tactics on a daily basis at airports and who report to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)."
