Against gifting developers

EDITOR:

I’m appalled by Supervisors Sweeney and Knight and all of the BOS gifting developer Mr. Grado with future public funds. This is the same Mr. Grado who proposed building a Burger King across from Herbert Green School, and sits on the City of Placerville’s economic development committee. Does he have our kids and residents interests at heart or his own special interests? This new connector road will insure that further development of proposed projects and unnecessary retail space will continue. I’m concerned about this county losing its rural and agricultural character and being turned into one strip mall after another. The argument used in favor of this project is it will prevent our tax money revenue being spent down the hill, but as we push this development, we start to look like down the hill, and will lose far more than we gain. Do we invite big box and chain stores or do we build on our historical and rural roots? Those of us who moved here ask what happened to the oaks in Oakland, the walnuts in Walnut Creek and the pleasant in Pleasanton. Let’s work at keeping the gold in El Dorado.

DAVID COLE

The answer my friend is easily found by connecting the dots...Palos Verdes Properties, Inc., the name of Grado's company in 1998 that purchased the property for Placerville's first big box store Big 5. That parcel for development was purchased from none other than Sweeney.

The bigger and more recent concern you should have would be an existing County Supervisor using Public Funds to develop his property under the guise of a County Courthouse.

Mr. Grado is listed as one of three residents representing the people of Placerville on the Economic advisory committee, appointed by our previous mayor Mr. Acuna and our current mayor Mrs. Matson. This is such a conflict of interest, he should have to submit a statement of economic interests(form 700) at the least, like other cities require.

Perhaps it is time for several things: An investigation by the State Attorney General, if not at a Federal Level. A recall of the BOS members connected to corruption and collusion. Prosecution of those found to be have broken laws. Lately, it appears that more and more county residents are getting sick of the county's politican's self serving agendas.

The money being spent to straighten out a curve on Fairlane Dr. and widen Placerville Dr. isn't what we need to be spending the taxpayers money on.The BOS and the City of Placerville act more to advance their own agenda, business interests and promote developers. They do this using the old argument that this will produce more tax revenues. We the people would like to see our neighborhoods and county as a whole not get swallowed up in this so called progress. This isn't what attracts people to this area, produces good paying jobs and aren't the kind of projects that build on our unique assets and that will sustain us into the future.
