Blame national media

EDITOR: The news media are significantly responsible for the copycat multiple shootings we are seeing in schools and elsewhere. They make the shooter notorious and spread his infamy around the world, influencing other troubled individuals who seek such notoriety.

  1. Darrin says:

I understand your point, but do not think the news media is the reason for more deaths. If Media were the cause of more shooting sprees, then why don’t more sprees happen in Norway, Germany, Canada, etc. after multiple homicides in those countries. My perspective is it is the access to guns that make it almost 20 times more deadly to live in the US than those other, similarly industrialized nations. The mass murders in Norway and Montreal are two of the few world-wide massacres than I can name outside the US. They were top stories in the newspapers worldwide due to their unusual occurance. What is the difference between those counties and the US? Similar in many ways except the amount of guns in the US. I can name too many to list here for the US.

With less than 5% of the world’s population, the United States is home to roughly 35–50 per cent of the world’s civilian-owned guns, heavily skewing the global geography of firearms and any relative comparison

  2. Ken Steers says:

Actually deaths are down here in the USA. The highest rate was in 1929. What I’ve always found interesting is the cause and affect rational by the Left to push their agenda. For instance, Earth has climate change, cause? The internal combustion engine. I would like to fight fire with fire using facts as presented by Darrin. Per his web site he presented the US has half the privately owned guns in the world. His perspective is that it is more dangerous to live here than in Germany. Germany? Sans the 2 world wars and the whole Holocaust thing. A utopia of Progressive mind think. I found by looking at his numbers the US show 50% of the private owned guns but only 5% of the reported gun fatalities. The numbers show that in fact the US is not any more dangerous than the rest of the world statistically. That is until you dig a little deeper in his ASSUMPTION. Not hard to do when you realize his Leftist tilt. You then can see that little countries who’s population is used but do not report fatalities like China, Angola, Lybia, Iran, Iraq Indonesia too many more to mention, roughly 38% of the worlds population. Do not report gun deaths. Kinda skews the date don’t you think? Even more interesting to me are Leftists Countries with some of the most draconian gun laws in the world, like Venezuela 11,115, Brazil 34,678 and South Africa 8319 gun related deaths. These are truly examples of what happens when governments facilitate a society where only criminals carry guns. So to sum up that is Darrin’s view regarding the state of the US society. He’s either scared or doesn’t trust us.

  3. Darrin says:

We can cherry pick counties with higher death rates. They are not even close to the socioeconomic level of the US. Have you seen the favellas of Sao Paulo? The littered hillside slums in Caracas? Not sure those are the apex of society that one should juxtapose the US situation. While the death rate may have gone down, the firearm homicide rate in the United States was 19.5 times higher than in other high-income countries.

Handguns Killed —- 48 in Japan, 8 in Great Britain, 34 Switzerland, 52 Canada, 58 Israel, 21 Sweden, 42 Germany AND 10,728 in United States of America

  4. Ken Steers says:

Darrin how sweet are those cherries you picking? Now you are making up phony numbers because you don’t like the source you quoted. 10,728 killed by hand guns in the US? The source you quoted listed 9,124 total gun related deaths. So again I consider the source. Progressives can’t debate facts even when they are sourcing them. Darrin how many gun related deaths in L.A? How many in the 17 northern counties? You are a law breaker if you posses a firearm in Brazil, Venezuela or Mexico. So under your assumptions if guns are illegal then no deaths by guns right? WRONG

  5. robertdnoll says:

citizens in Mexico can and do own firearms

  6. chrispytahoe says:

It is a facinating dilema no? More people die every year by heart attck and obesity than gun violence. Where is the outrage? The media has little to do with this. I researched gun violence in American schools. It has been happening with regularity since the 1700s! Documented! Sure, the number of kills per incident has skyrocketed in the last 20 years. Mostly due to high capacity weapons more readilly available. Strict gun laws will help a little I suppose. Just like the mothers of MADD will tell you, even if drunk driving laws save one person, it is worth our liberty and freedom right?

  7. Dink Lane says:

FBI reports that 774 people were killed by Mass murder since 2006 (that 4 or more people at the same shooting)…… Center for Disease Control (which were BLOCKED from collecting gun data) that MORE people die from GUNS than motor vehicle accidents…. so it could be WORSE..

  8. Ken Steers says:

How do you debate wrong assumption and bad data. robertdnoll, is Mexico gun laws what you want in the US? You say they can and do own guns. Only a very minute class do. And their murder rate? Twice as high as ours with half the population. Per Darrin’s web site numbers 9,300 gun related deaths in the US. That includes people shot by our law enforcement. 300 million people. 4600 people perished via job related injuries in the US last year. What’s next PAL’s? Eliminate jobs? You’re doing a fine job ruining this country.

  9. robertdnoll says:

    so wrong

  10. Ken Steers says:

    So IGNORANT

  11. Ken Steers says:

So obviously the Progressives like robertdnoll won’t stop until the US has the same gun controls as Mexico.

  12. robertdnoll says:

    half cocked

  13. robertdnoll says:

talking out of the wrong orifice

  14. Ken Steers says:

Yes you do robertdnoll. Obviously you can’t help yourself. Mr Weidmer’s hypothesis has been validated. Regarding the “gun violence” numbers by the other Progressive Darrin. 9300 gun related murders in the US. How many do ya think were police established? Obviously the democrat socialist no longer will tolerate the American Mass to cling to their guns and religion.

  15. robertdnoll says:

thin skin with buttons all over

  16. billzz says:

My observation about gun crimes in Japan, Germany, Switzerland, etc. is that I have been to all of the countries so far named and the difference is that they are all homogeneous. In other words, most of the people in Japan are Japanese, etc. Most of the people in the US are heterogeneous. There was even a full page ad in the Bee (forgive me Michael, I have sinned,) that said that “Diversity is Good!) Well diversity is a quality that can be good or it can be bad. I like diversity in restaurants, but I do not value diversity in some culture’s legal systems, where they cut off body parts. Anyway, I’m not sure that other countries experiences apply to the US.

  17. Darrin says:

chrispytahoe RE:More people die every year by heart attck and obesity than gun violence. A persons right to kill themself by McSuicide is not my problem.

  18. Darrin says:

Ken, every one of these countries is at war Angola, Libya, Iran, Iraq and Indonesia. China has threatened Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam with war over islands in the South China Sea. Police established? You are saying the police are murdering citizens? Not sure where I got that data, my apologies, in the five years from 2007 to 2011 there were APPROXIMATELY 57,000 firearm deaths in the United States.
    in 2007 - 10,129 deaths, 2008 – 9,528 deaths, 2009 – 9,199 deaths,2010 – 8,874 deaths, 2011 – 8,583 deaths. This FBI website should be reliable enough for you, no?
    http://1.usa.gov/UAV000

  19. Darrin says:

46,313 firearm deaths in the United States from 2007 to 2011. Sorry for the erroneous 57,000. I hit the 4, not the 5 as intended. Now they will really have something to tear into…

  20. Darrin says:

    oh, I give up…

  21. Richard says:

Dr. Weider, we came to the very essence of the gun debit, influencing other troubled individuals with access to a WEAPON who seek such notoriety

  22. Foamie Mouth® says:

    Gun debit, Richard?
