Booming sounds

EDITOR:

In response to Willy Warren’s letter ” What are those booming sounds?” Fallon, Nev., has the Fallon Navel air station. They train at three sites relatively close to us, Highway 95 next to the Walker River Indian reservation, Highway 95 by Sheckler Reservoir and Highwy 50 and Highway 31. I frequent Sand Mountain, Nev. and have witnessed the bombing at the Hwy 50 range. It is quite awesome. I believe that you can hear them from here even though they are some 140 to 170 miles away. The entrance to the Hwy 50 range has acres of “target stock” (old army transports, jet aircraft and other vehicles), even what looks like simulated towns (buildings). Check out Google Maps satellite views you can see all this. I have wondered for years what those sounds were until I looked into it. I believe that this is your answer.

I hear those crazy booms all the time in Shingle Springs, never knew what it was....Bombing practice makes perfect sense ...39 years ago I was living in South Sacramento when an Ammo Train carrying Bombs bound for Vietnam Exploded in a Roseville rail-yard....It probably happened 40 miles away, but I thought it was going to blow the windows out of our house..
