Candidate forums

EDITOR:

On behalf of the League of Women Voters of El Dorado County, I wish to express my dismay with the failure of our elected Assembly and Congressional legislators to participate in non-partisan candidate forums. For over a dozen years the League has conducted forums aimed at giving the citizens of the county a chance to listen to candidates express their views on issues of the day. The citizens have been able to submit questions of importance and listen to the candidate’s responses. Candidates often share similar views; but when they don’t, we get to hear them express their differing personal ideas. It is through this exchange of similarities and differences that voters are able to decide which candidate most closely mirrors their views and is thus the recipient of their vote in the election.

The League of Women Voters has scheduled forums for county supervisor and judicial candidates, but our citizens need to demand that they have the right to face and hear their legislators.

KATHLEEN MCCOY
President, The League of Women Voter of El Dorado County

Ms. McCoy -- The problem is that the Incumbents PLAN on voters to just react to an "R" by their name -- NOT LEARN about their candidates (Democrats use this strategy as well...That's how congress got their 9% approval.).... The ones who won't come -- have no record (119 votes to stop Planned Parenthood is NOT a record...it's a Mantra.) .... Beth Gaines doesn't even campaign (She received $98,000 from INSURANCE companies...She got 1/10th of that amount from people in her district) .... McClintock is disliked by MOST of the Moderate Republicans.... Neither one want to take questions because they don't have any answers and don't WANT to make a mistake...they are running on IMAGE... If they showed up at a debate ... they'd look stupid. Most people don't vote FOR stupid.

prime time: I'm confused by your link... I got through about 3 or 4 minutes of the video... I couldn't watch it for all the hyperbolic statements.... Fascism? Really? Do we have everyone on the same page? Germany was united by the European penalty -- To PAY for WWI... We are NOWHERE near that.... You can like or dislike a candidate.... and you can believe in Hyperbolic statements or hear the facts.... That's YOUR choice.... The Candidates are planning on voters to accept their silence .... I actually read ... and use that evidence as a thread of consistency to form my own thought ... When you use "causal inferences" and "ambiguous" statements that leads to "fallacies" and we end up looking for WMDs in Iraq....

Seems like NONE of the candidates or their consultants at the state level believe that the LWV forums have much value. Just a suggestion, but it makes some sense to ASK THEM why instead of writing a letter to the editor. Waiting for some constructive feedback from this venue is a waste of time as already demonstrated.

Suggestion -- "believe the LWV have much value." What on earth does that mean? That was insulting and disgusting. Would you say that to any of the women in your life? Voters = Rep + Dem + any other party

Pseudonym Dink, How or why are you disgusted or insulted? Is your mom a member of the LWV? Are you?

OK, Ken, who can't believe he doesn't know everyone and everything, I'll bite -- "I don't believe that Ken Steers has much value." There you shouldn't be offensive.

Pseudonym Dink, How are you disgusted or insulted? Are you a member of the LWV? It seems you are and might actually be a member. I would suggest to their President Ms McCoy that if she or her group is feeling marginalized by the local politicians not attending their forums then to perform some self introspection as to why. Writing a whiny letter to the editor doesn't cut it. As far as me not having much value to you. Why would I? But one things for sure I'm real.

The League of Women Voters has ONE purpose -- INFORM THE VOTER. They are a non-partisan group. .... It sounds like "Suggestion" and "Steers" don't like being NON-PARTISAN and they don't like being INFORMED.... (That's probably why Steers keeps taunting the other writers.)

Pseudonym Dink, again your Progressive traits keep pushing you to jump to irrational unsubstantiated conclusions. For the third time how can you speak for the LWV's unless you are a member or their spokesman? Are you a member? Am I taunting you? Actually I feel that, even though your not real, I still try to communicate with you at a level higher than you treat others. But trust me when I say I'm more than willing to deal with you at any level you wish. Again all I can say to Pseudonym Dink and the LVW is to man up. Do some self introspection. If you truly believe that you are non-partisan then count how many conservative members you have in you club. For if the number is less than 60% you don't truly represent the voters of this county accurately.

Ken, I'm not a member of the League of Women Voters and wouldn't attempt to speak for them. But I have been to a number of their candidate forums. In the LWV handling of the debates I've seen no demonstration of bias or partisanship. Audience questions are fielded evenhandedly, each candidate being given the opportunity to respond. The forums are one of the few opportunities to directly question candidates and learn their positions. Particularly useful is that the diverse audience questions ALWAYS include significant issues I've not thought about at all. Quite superior, in my opinion, to the partisan mud-slinging found elsewhere. Attend one of the forthcoming forums. That's the only way you'll ever know.
