Companies

EDITOR:

I beg to differ with Ray Labahn regarding companies shipping their business off shore. There is an import and export fee and by the time they pay these fees are they really saving money? If you have ever noticed the goods that they ship back to us are not properly made and have to be recalled or, as in the baby food and dog foods, not processed right and and it has to be recalled and tossed. Who’s saving money? You will note that some of these companies are starting to return to the United States. I wonder if this has anything to do with poor workmanship and they are saving money in the long run. Because they are getting a bad reputation for inferior work. One of their reasons for outsourcing was to eliminate Unions. Well to inform you the Unions were estalished after World War II and they were what made the “Middle Class.”

During the Great Depression my father lost his job working for Fischer Body in Pontiac, Mich. We went south to Arkansas where he share cropped to care for his family so as he said, “We would not have to go to the poor house.” Salaries were very low in the 40s. I started work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for $12 a week, two years later my sister started working for them and at the same rate.

In 1944 I was in San Francisco and went to work for Pacific Tel. and Tel. at $19 a week. In my town in Arkansas the Telephone Company paid the highest wages to the employee. Those that could find work in the 10 cent stores only made $10 a week. Then along came the Unions and saleries began to increase and people were getting health insurance and pensions throught their companies. Lots of people now don’t like the Unions and don’t pay dues if they are working for a Union company. But O’boy they sure like the money and the benefits that the Unions get for them. If they don’t pay their dues, they should not be allowed the benefits. If that were to happen you would be able to hear the screaming around the world. There are no Unions in the Southern States and that is why Toyota and others built their manufacturing plants down there. How many cars over the years has Toyota had to recall because of the problems, workmanship or engineering?

You can blame this Union fiasco (trying to eliminate them), voter registration and stand-your-ground to ALEC.ORG go on the Internet and it will really open your eyes as to what is happening to our country, the United States of America. The few that are trying to tear us apart.

Why all of a sudden is it a bad thing to be part of a union, earn a decent wage, have benefits and retire with a pension? Why is social security now an "entitlement" when we worked for it and paid into it and want it paid back when we retire? These attacks on the middle class and women's rights are taking us back to the 40's. And it is this countries richest that are trying to take everything away from us. ALEC.ORG is truly scary.
