EID votes to support small farms

By From page A5 | August 04, 2014

EDITOR:

The EID board voted 3-2 at a contentious board meeting on July 14 to continue to support the small farm water rate with “qualified” livestock added to the mix. The Democrat report totally ignored any comments from non-farm ratepayers in its coverage.

The comments by the farming community were interesting:

Dr. Robert Shuman: “Farming is the music of life.”

My question for Dr. Shuman is: “Do you really believe that EID board members were elected to determine what I should value?”

Sue Taylor: “Has farming increased or decreased since you (two members of the EID board) attacked farmers?”

My comment to Ms. Talyor is: “The EID board was elected to direct management to operate EID in a fiscally responsible way, not decide who wins and who loses on the pricing of water. I’d like to know who these Solomons are that can peer into their crystal balls and shower favors on preferred industries that are going to provide the jobs for El Dorado County.”

Of course, the Cost of Service Study is always held up to justify any pricing decisions. I was not involved in that study, but I suspect that it is seriously flawed and needs to be redone in a transparent setting with a fair representation from the ratepayer community both residential and agriculture. This issue will not go away until that is done and I strongly suspect that California’s water allocation problems are going to get worse in the future.
