In Mr. Alger’s response to my letter concerning austerity, he indicates a dismal waste of $800 billion in the “failed” stimulus. Calling it a failed stimulus is a Tea/Republican talking point that may not be accurate.
About $374 Billion of the stimulus went to tax cuts as I recall — does Mr. Alger claim tax cuts are bad? And, of the remaining $425 billion surely some good came from it unless the Democrats embezzled it down to the last dime.
As for the United States not having the financial position to pursue more stimulus spending, the United States does not have a credit card limit and we can afford whatever we want to afford (false wars, corporate welfare, tax breaks available to the wealthy, bloated military, etc.). I think I read there are 423 military golf courses around the world. A fact: The military does not need even one golf course.
Mr. Alger, austerity is not the answer when the economy is struggling. Stimulus is the answer.
