Finding housing seems impossible now

EDITOR:

My family was approved for the Section 8 program recently. It’s not because we don’t work or because we’re not capable of managing our own lives but simply because we needed a little help.

Over a year ago we were homeless with no hope in sight. There were problems with addiction, denial and just the feeling of utter aloneness. It was enough to cause me to lose my kids and to be evicted from my apartment after 10 years of living there. I literally had nothing, not even a place to sleep at night.

Believe it or not CPS was my saving grace. Call me crazy, but myself and my fiance were both offered treatment because of them. We both got help and nearly a year later are still clean and sober. We have both secured jobs, have one of the three children back and graduated treatment. The only thing left is finding a bigger place so my two older sons can come home as well.

Unfortunately, with Section 8 and my $300 eviction, no one will give us a chance. I’m glad people can still get jobs even if they’ve been fired before or the world would be in trouble. Unfortunately, it’s easier to find drugs than a second chance for the recovered addict. It’s all really a sad thing.

I got evicted after 10 years at my residence (I’m 29) because I just couldn’t get it. I definitely get it now and my life is way different. We live in a one-bedroom apartment, but can’t any longer. I’m not giving up on getting my older sons back and I never will.

Hopefully someone will have a heart and give us a chance. Our voucher is for $1,166 so we can pay $1,050 a month at most. Section 8 tenants are not all the same. Some of us are really on the road to recover our lives and put our families back together.
