EDITOR: Upon reading the Jan. 28 Letters to the Editor, I felt the need to express a bit of zealotry. When rights are given up freedom of choice is also.
For instance, abolition of private property. The government is utilizing condemnation of property more these days. Heavy progressive income taxes. Yes, California voters bought the bill of sale to raise taxes; we needed to give more, our fair share so to speak. Government control of communications and transportation.
For quite some time now the media has forgotten what journalism is truly supposed to report. The government is now in the car business. Government control of labor. How many times did union bosses visit the White House?
Corporate farms, regional planning. When the basics in life, food and water are planned for us, what is next? El Dorado County saw up front what happens when locally raised milk is not approved by the state. Oops, another piece of freedom of choice dealt with.
Government control of education. The government has been in the state and local education business for decades. How do you feel about that?
Have you heard of the Communist Manifesto? Citizens give up their rights for the sake of the “common good.” Does this sound familiar?
Oh yes, thank goodness the right to buy whatever newspaper one wishes has not yet been taken away. No one is holding a gun to anyone’s head to subscribe to the Mountain Democrat.
Speaking of guns, some folks are turning their guns into some law enforcement agencies for money. For those that believe strongly that it is the right thing to do, they have that right. For those of us who believe differently that is our right.
Thank goodness for freedom of the press and thank you Mountain Democrat for allowing freedom of speech. God Bless America and the Constitution of the United States.

It is about choices...I have learned recently that if you speak your mind--sometimes odd things happen...lololololol. Nice happy article--good luck. I love the on line democrat (as well as the paper version) I enjoy reading the debates between people.

Melba, it is the willingness of free citizens to turn over their rights and freedoms that astonished me the most. It is as if all of human history did not take place. They have no awareness of anything that took place before they were born. In order to believe that the government will achieve fairness for all by doing away with liberty they have to believe that man can create good government. There is no evidence of that in all of history. And they have no time to be bothered with learning it. Slavery re-branded as fairness and economic justice.

6 corporations (Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, CBS & NBC) control nearly all U.S. media: TV networks, cable channels, movie studios, newspapers, magazines, publishing houses & music labels. Does it matter?
