Garden Valley Fire budget

By From page A5 | September 25, 2013

The Garden Valley Fire District Board of Directors will hold a special meeting on Sept. 26 at 9:30 a.m. This meeting will be a budget workshop and adoption of the 2013-14 budget.

Garden Valley Fire provides a full service fire department with paramedic service 24 hours per day. We do this with a combination of permanent employees and dedicated volunteers. We have a dedicated fire chief and creative staff members who think “outside the box” to keep things going. We recently purchased a replacement fire engine without using local tax money to pay for it.

But the reality is local taxes support only about 75 percent of our regular costs. From a public policy viewpoint this is bad business. I am proud of the dedicated staff who work hard to keep the doors open and provide a vital service to the public, but we must find ways to increase regular and permanent funding to ensure we can continue.

We invite the public to attend our special meeting on Sept. 26. See the numbers for yourselves and find out how our special group of employees keep things going and tell us what you think.
