Getting along

EDITOR:

To quote Rodney King’s plaintive plea …”can’t we all get along?” was brought sharply into focus after reading the letters in the Oct. 28 edition of the Mountain Democrat.

One letter stood out from all the rest because of the vitriol. Harsh and caustic commentary towards others who do not share your political ideology is not the way to win a debate. Facts, facts and facts coupled with a reasoned, rational delivery would be more effective.

My fellow Americans, our poor country is falling apart very quickly as one ideology fights to become the only ideology. This ongoing struggle has paralyzed Congress and has brought misery upon our most vulnerable citizens. I believe we all know that compromise is the key to any long-lasting success. However, such success will never come about if the ideological vitriol is allowed to continue.

Let’s talk facts with reasoned and logical recourse with the good of the majority of the people as the outcome …”can’t we all get along?”

Compromising with tyranny gets us what exactly? History tells us that there where those who marched the Jews into the gas chambers and slept like babies afterward. They compromised with radicalism. Compromise has led to a freight train of laws, rules, regulations, fines, taxes, penalties, agencies, bureaucracies, countless government thugs and unimaginable debt. Every last one of them have one thing in common, they are the enemy of what this country was founded on. INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY. You go ahead an make nice with those who will determine everything for you given the opportunity. To them it matters not how you object to them and how you frame it. The only that matters is that you object. For that they will punish, berate, slander and abuse you. They are immune to facts, logic, reason and historical evidence. They care about one thing and one thing only. From those according to their means to those according to their needs.

Anthony, are you referring to this? - LINK - Guns and Obamacare ~~~ "EDITOR: At some point, Alice tells the Mad Hatter: “We’re all mad here.” She must have been at a Tea Party meeting. The right needs to explain the logic behind their belief that a gun in every hand will make us safe, but health insurance for all will kill us. Anthony, I'm going over the LTE that I assume has triggered your Rodney King flash-back. You must have been troubled by this comment. ~~~ cookie65 - October 29, 2013 - 6:59 am" Barack Obama meets with HM The Queen. He asked her, "Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Is there any advice you can give to me?" "Well," said the Queen, "the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people." Obama frowned, and then asked, "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?" The Queen took a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy; you just ask them to prove their intelligence by answering a riddle." The Queen pushed a button on her intercom. "Please find Tony Blair and send him here, would you?" After a little while Tony Blair walked into the room and said, "Yes, Your Majesty?" The Queen smiled and said, "Answer me this please Tony, your mother and father have a child. It's not your brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?" Without pausing for a moment, Tony Blair answered, "That would be me." "Yes! Very good," said the Queen. When Obama went back home he asked Joe Biden, his vice president, the same question. "Joe, answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It's not your brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?" "I'm not sure," said Biden "Let me get back to you on that one...." He went to his advisors and asked every one, but none could give him an answer. Finally, he ran into Sarah Palin in a restaurant one evening. Biden asked, "Sarah, can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child and it's not your brother or your sister. Who is it?" Sarah Palin answered back immediately, "That's easy, it's me!" Biden smiled, and said, Gee thanks, Sarah!" Then, he went back to speak with Obama. "Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It's Sarah Palin!" Obama got up, stomped over to Biden, and angrily yelled into his face, "No! You stupid idiot, don't you know anything? It's Tony Blair.' ~~~ Reply | Report abusive comment

. . . And if it wasn't the previous comment that triggered your reminiscence of Rodney King then perhaps it is this one? ~~~ cookie65 October 29, 2013 - 6:45 am "Difference Between leftists and Conservatives. A leftist and a Conservative were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person. The Conservative gave the homeless person his business card and told him to come to his business for a job. He then took twenty dollars out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person. The leftist was very impressed, and when they came to another homeless person, he decided to help. He walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. He then reached into the Conservative's pocket and gave the homeless person fifty dollars. Now you understand the difference between leftists and Conservatives." - Reply | Report abusive comment

David, the fact that the groupthink lemmings are incapable of an original "thawt" is legendary, it is what defines you. But you display it with all the effectiveness of a enormous pink billboard with flashing green neon lights. Following your statement I am led to conclude that those who tell every American they must purchase healthcare insurance whether the want it or not are not self righteous but those who oppose such an overreach of government are. Those who have lied repeatedly to the American people to force legislation on the country that no one wanted are not self righteous, those who oppose it are. Those who have cancelled the insurance of 10's of millions because it doesn't meet with their approval are not self righteous, those who oppose such tyranny are. Those who use the federal government to punish private enterprise they don't approve of are not self righteous, those who oppose the abuse are. Those who tell people what size soda they can buy are not self righteous, those who believe people can decide for themselves are. Those who use the federal tax code to punish that which the don't approve of and reward that which they do are not self righteous, those who oppose such progressiveness are. Those who try and tell people what kind of car they can drive and which lane the can use are not self righteous, those who oppose it are. Those who are fundamentally transforming the relationship between citizen and government with the takeover of healthcare are not self righteous, those who oppose it are. Those who make entire forests off limits are not self righteous, those who oppose it are. Those who barricade WWII vets from their own memorial while allowing a bunch of illegals access are not self righteous, those who oppose it are. Those who think the federal government owns our national monuments and not the citizens are not self righteous, those who disagree are. I hope you get everything you ask for. “If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” -- Samuel Adams

Eventually there comes a time when, despite all the indisputable facts, all sane reasoning and logic, Liberals will just turn deaf, dumb and blind to everything and continue to drive this Country into the abyss based solely on their upside-down ideology...When that time comes it's up to the rational people to stand up and take any steps necessary..

No Krispy, your math skills are comparable to your critical thinking skills. The mere pittance of income taxes that were withheld from your little job are not equivalent to what you and your 2 offspring sucked up in 6 months “off the public teet”, as your comrade Cook likes to call it. And unless you checked that little box on your tax return that you would like to pay more than you owe, assess what you sucked up, wrote a check for that amount plus interest and sent it to the IRS, you DID NOT “more than pay it back”. You merely paid what was due and owed in taxes that anyone would have paid in that particular year.

Furthermore, I have never subjugated the downtrodden, as I am an original foot soldier of an organization that helps children involved in prostitution and pornography. I personally would put myself at risk rescuing these children. The wrecking ball obamanation still has a little over 3 years to cause as much damage to this country as the left can get away with. It will be interesting to see just how far his most faithful believers will go making excuses and blaming everything in the universe for the always predictable failures and destruction of leftism. They can never turn loose of their emotional bondage long enough to actually take an intellectually honest look at the results of leftism. Pretending the results don't matter or are non-existent is the key to what makes leftism a mental disease. They refuse to associate the destruction caused by leftism with themselves. It is also what gives them the sense of being morally superior and highly educated. If you never face the results of your beliefs and policies and only the compassion you claim to have you can never be wrong. They live in such denial and delusion that everything was Bush's fault for 8 years and beyond and not a single thing is obama's fault.

obozocare makes for a fundamental change in the relationship between government and citizen. It isn't a question of whether or not some bureaucrat and a file cabinet full of regulations will be the determining factor in your access to healthcare, kathleen sebelius let that cat out of the bag when she unilaterally denied a 10 year old girl a lung transplant. In the immortal words of leftist compassion she proclaimed, "some people live and some people die". My inability to relate to leftism is best illustrated by this event. HOW can you choose to remain blind when the glaring evidence is right before your eyes? It is baffling to me what they choose not to see.

oh brother did you bother to read my original comment from Ed's story that set off the firestorm from you guys because I dared to question the brokenness of the system? We as a society have a system to help people who truly need it. It is a safety net. Something that WE as a society (every last one of us) do because we should. If you think it is because of leftism that those programs exist you are more confused than most. Where does the money come from? The system is abused beyond comprehension. It isn't even disputable. Who uses it for political gain? Who pays for it? I know you will never answer my question about what does leftism create and/or produce so feel free to continue changing the subject.

Name for me a single thing leftism creates and/or produces? oh brother gave me some concocted excuse for someone elevating themselves through life's trials and struggles with the help of the TAXPAYERS not leftism. Leftism did not create one single dime of the wealth and/or money used to assist the person in question. Capitalism did. Leftism creates nothing but dependence.

Just like your comments about fox, hannity and what ever else your tiny imagination can invent. I don't watch the media of any kind. Fox is leftism-lite. It isn't even pseudo conservatism. But it sure has those accustomed to 24/7 leftism in a tizzy. hannity isn't any brighter than you. I have been an anti-leftist since David Brinkley and Cronkite were the network talking heads. I never needed anyone to explain to me that private property is private property and stealing is stealing no matter how communism disguises it.

I lived in LA during this--it was messy..and more complicated than his famous statement. Many people got hurt during the episode...and after...I had left for up here by that time--but my friends stood on the roof tops with guns protecting their space. "The acquittals are generally considered to have triggered the 1992 Los Angeles riots, in which 53 people were killed, and over two thousand were injured. The riots ended after soldiers from the United States Army National Guard, along with United States Marines from nearby Camp Pendleton, California, were called in to assist local authorities and quell the riots." I was there in the beg....it only got worse. And not just in LA. It was a nice sentiment--but major damage had been done before it ended.

  • Phil VeerkampNovember 05, 2013 - 8:44 am

Ah! I see the rub. You missed the point, David. The point of the Charlie 12 Step story was not to conflate all addicts and alcoholics in to one homogeneous group. The point, David, is a simple acknowledgment of powerlessness over another person's addiction/recovery. To mix metaphors, you can lead an alcoholic to recovery but you can't make him drink. I saved the dog. I let the alcoholic go.

Im glad David...because sometimes it is the animal stories that show we are still human on this wall. I understood Phil when he told the story of saving the dog. sometimes you have to let the human...even if you love them--hit bottom and rise on their own. The dog was an innocent. Remember the story--the man himself made a choice to give the dog a chance. For me that showed courage...to allow his furry friend a different shot at life.

People were really shocked when it moved to the "better" parts of town...where I grew up...thats about the time the cavalry came. People set things on fire...my friend had left her vw van to be fixed--when she went the next day--the whole place was burned down--she loved that old van. She didnt want new--she wanted vintage--finally found one ten years later..in another state.

Things getting a bit too heated. So in attempt to lighten the mood, I offer up the 40+ years ago real-life story of Why I Hate Clowns: .....Momma decided that my Daddy would be in charge of planning and running my birthday party and she expected nothing but the most memorable of events for myself and the other 15 or 20 sugar saturated celebrants. The day of the party was quite warm, so the shindig became a poolside event with cake and ice cream being served in the pool house. All went reasonably well until it no longer, well, did. You see, we lived on a small island off the coast of North Carolina and, as such, had limited contact with the mainland, spoke a language unique to islanders and existed in a rather sheltered bubble with only one television station. Everyone knew each other. Everyone had a perfect wife, perfect home and perfect children. Until my birthday party. I had to go to the bathroom and ducked into the pool house guest bath; being sure to remove my pants before placing myself on the commode. (This because my older cousin had mentioned that sewer monsters had been sucking up small children from toilets because their size made them easier to pull down the piping and later consumed somewhere far far from Hatteras. If my pants were off, I figured, then at least the possibility of a quick run away from the toilet gave a chance should the sewer serpent begin its nefarious attack upon my nether region) Finished with my business and about to put my pants on, there was a noise at the side door which was my new puppy Teaukee. I opened the door to let him in, but this scared him and Teaukee went running down the side of the pool house headed towards the pool. Where he was not allowed; a strict rule governing retention of said puppy. Sooo.. without thinking of pants - took after puppy at right much the same time that Daddy's friend - otherwise known as 'Bubbles the Clown' and who also loved to pull a cork - decided he wanted to check out Daddy's new chainsaw. Coming around the corner looping back towards the front of the pool house, I run smack up to Bubbles The Killer Clown. Whom in his drunken state found funny in a waving fired up chainsaw at a little kid. He had a cigarette hanging from his mouth and a smeared clown face that was anything but 'bubbly'. This, as one might expect, was most unsettling. I screamed. The clown tried to reason with me but that only made things worse. I picked up the closest thing I could find to defend myself with which was a near empty mason of moonshine; lobbing same at clown, Bubbles. Bubbles ducked and the bottle sailed right past him. As he turned to escape from screaming kid, his drunk butt stumbled on the brickwork and he and the new chainsaw were sent into the pool. Neither he - nor chainsaw - could float. Much less swim. Oddly, neither could Daddy who jumped in after him. For a people who lived on the beach, it still strikes me odd that only Momma and myself could swim. (Momma having mastered a curious dog paddle type swim that ensured her 12 inch high hair remained ever vertical) The mason jar cleared clown and went thru open window into the pool house where cake and presents sat upon Momma's new smoked glass and brass casual living dining set. Delivered by boat. The jar hit the table top and with the combined weight of cake and presents, it shattered and collapsed onto the tile flooring with a rather vulgar noise I have not soon forgotten. This, in turn, terrified momma's cat Kiki. Kiki - now also screaming - proceeded to climb/shred Momma's new silk draperies. Also delivered by boat. So there we were. Drowning drunk clown. Naked birthday boy. Drowning Daddy. All my friends. And my parents perfect friends. Staring. Silently. The only noise that could be heard was that of the cat who by this time had lost bladder control and was shooting a stream of cat wizz down the silk draperies and onto the floor. Momma cried. Daddy had to live on the beach for about a week before being let into the house again. And I lost both Rock-em-Sock-em Robots and Big Wheel. I am unaware of who rescued Bubbles the drunken clown. But needless to say, it was a few years before we had company again.

Anyone who disagrees with you suddenly has “a lack of comprehension skills”-your redundant fallback.
