Stick with the Constitution

By From page A5 | February 25, 2013

EDITOR: As Americans, we are exceptional because of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which includes the right to keep and bear arms. With that right comes exceptional responsibility.

Ms. Lanza did not take the requisite responsibility to keep her guns locked and secure from a member of her family that should not have had access to any guns — two ominous errors of judgment occurring at the same moment.

More gun legislation will not mitigate poor judgment by a few at the sake of many. We either keep our exceptionalism along with the burdens of responsibility, or cease to be Americans. We have the freedoms to create laws binding our exceptionalism and responsibility … and become something we may not, in the end, wish to be.

By straying from constitutional intent, we are not unlike the vivid description in Hemmingway’s book, “The Green Hills of Africa” where a wounded hyena is running away … eating its own intestines. It was his only non-fiction book. Let us commit to smarter, more responsible gun ownership, not more laws, and avoid the pitfall of tyranny.
