A Bushmaster was used at Sandy Hook

EDITOR:

As the debate continues locally and nationally on what can be done to reduce gun violence in the United States, it is important to accept incontrovertible facts as a starting point. Unfortunately, Rod Kerr’s letter in last Friday’s Mountain Democrat republished a false story that the shooter at the Sandy Hook school mass murder did not use a Bushmaster .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle to kill 20 children and five teachers. The Bushmaster knock-off of a military assault rifle was in fact used for this mass murder, but those opposed to an assault weapons ban have consistently attempted to falsify this for their own purposes.

What apparently happened is that a news reporter saw a long weapon being removed from the killer’s vehicle after the killing and mistakenly assumed it was a rifle. In fact, it was a shotgun. The Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle and two pistols were found within the school. The semi-automatic rifle with its 30-round magazine was used for the murders and one of the pistols for the killer’s suicide. If anyone doubts this, I suggest a visit to the Connecticut Police Website where Lieutenant Paul Vance has repeatedly laid out the facts in an effort to silence “the conspiracy theorists that are trying to muck-up the waters.” The “propaganda” here is by Mr. Kerr and others who oppose measures intended to prevent tragedies such as this, not Janet Robinson, the school superintendent who told the truth that some apparently don’t want to hear.
