Local hunger

EDITOR:

Hello, my name is Sierra Potts. I am a student at Oak Ridge High School and I have a concern about your paper. Are you aware that 15 percent of the people that go to Twin Lakes Food Bank are from El Dorado County and are hungry? Many people are not informed on this local issue and I think it’s time they know. As a community we need to help one another and your paper has the power to do this. Knowing that one of my neighbors could be going to a food bank is a startling thought. If your paper published more stories regarding our local hunger issue, people may feel more inclined to help and get involved. Please consider my letter and all the hungry families of El Dorado County.

Sierra...they do print many articles about the hunger in our county. I know I have posted many comments about our breadline up here in Pollock. People have read the articles and posts--they have to decide what they chose to do. But this paper does print the issue. Good luck getting the word out...but more importantly--getting the people to really listen. Look at the money being spent by non profits...what are they doing? If one feels that-- lets say a bike trail is a good thing--think about another opinion--could those thousands of dollars have been better used helping our hungry for now. I know where I am-- a non profit felt spending $5000.00 dollars on carpet was more important than just letting the money grow to maybe help another more pressing issue--helping our children grow intellectually. Its perspective. Good luck.

Your heart is in the right place, Sierra! Each time the issue of hunger is brought to our attention, it gives another chance for perhaps just one person to stand up and do something proactive to help the hungry: volunteer, organize a fundraising event, donate food. In EDC, we've got The Upper Room, Community Resource Center, and the Hangtown Haven that are all excellent places to start. Caring is the beginning of positive change!

Was the twin lakes food bank the one at rolling hills this morning? I would like to know whom we may contact on their board panel as we were treated very poorly and embarassed by their manager at the giveaway and were just trying to help like we do every week. any info would be appreciated as we would like to express our dissappointment in the way we were treated so it doesnt happen again
