Camino residentDecember 10, 2012 - 3:48 pm
The accident was on hwy 50 just east of Apple Cafe, near Braeburn Lane, which intersects the hwy on the westbound side. The main reason this area is so dangerous is that there is cross traffic exiting and entering the hwy. From what I understand, a deer may have jumped into traffic, and the westbound driver swerved to avoid it, hitting the east bound driver. So unfortunate, but it appears to have been a terrible accident, nothing hidden to avoid liability. Just very sad.

This is indeed a very dangerous stretch. It would probably reduce the danger a bit it the speed limit were reduced to 55. 65 miles an hour (and many coming downhill, as the errant vehicle in this accident was) for 4 opposing lanes of traffic with no barriers makes for a combined 130 mph impact. And many coming down the hill are going 70+. A simple reduction in the speed limit would be a good start.

Warning, when using the roadways regardless of location, caution should be used. Does that help?

Camino resident, a bay area driver swerved their planet saving matchbox car into oncoming traffic in order to allow the wildlife to safely cross the freeway. And some local innocent little girl paid the utimate price for his stupidity. He probably learned that the wildlife is in danger because we are intruding on its natural habitat so he was doing his part to protect them.

It happened again last night (Sunday the 6th). I was eastbound on 50 and came across the accident scene with what looked like a Volvo on its roof in the westbound lanes. Right near Braeburn. Slow it down Caltrans.
Sad, sad, sadJanuary 07, 2013 - 5:52 pm
Cookie65: I cannot believe your heartless and flippant comment. Three family members lost their lives, as well as, the little girl from our area, leaving another little girl without a family. Yes, it's sad that the westbound driver swerved to miss a deer and ran into an eastbound car, but to make light of losses suffered by many families shows your lack of thought over political ideology.
cookie65January 07, 2013 - 7:42 pm
I didn't "make light" of the tragic losses. I made a comment about the stupidity that caused it. Learn to tell the difference. You can't solve a problem unless you are willing to admit what it is.

Cookie is right. All liberals are bad drivers. All conservatives are good drivers. If a liberal swerves to avoid a deer it is because he is a stupid bleeding heart environmentalist. If a conservative swerves to avoid a deer it is because he is a smart wilderness person who knows that a deer through your windshield will kill you. How's that, Cookie?

Rich, here is a letter to the editor of this paper dated Nov 21, 2102 including a comment I made. http://www.mtdemocrat.com/letters/animal-crossing-area-more-dangerous/
cookie65January 08, 2013 - 5:25 am
Also Rich, I didn't call the driver a stupid liberal. I also made a comment regarding using caution when ever you use the roadway. Do you have an issue with that too? I seem to have struck a nerve or stumbled on a sensative topic for you regarding the ignorance associated with liberal invironmentalists.

Cookie has had an angry life. Lol! Hey cooks, up here in Tahoe we see plenty of foothill meth trash roll thier 76' Blazers trying to cross the snow berm! Lol! Point is, if you do not regularly drive in certain conditions, you are ill prepared for when you must make a split second decision. It is human nature.

No, Cookie, you right much showed your ass.

This is a tragedy! cookie65- i hope you did your homework- that car driver that you called an idiot also lost loved ones in fact the driver was the only one that survived this incident. it is tragic that you are voicing your opinion without a care about who you are hurting. the family that struck the "environmentalist" also lost a life of a child- this is not a laughing matter. you should be ashamed of yourself. HWY 50 has a dangerous stretch of road that need to be reviewed by the State. read and educate yourselves- it's not just drivers that cause accidents- road design can also be an issue like this stretch of HWY 50- http://tahoetransportation.org/capital-projects/us-50-south-shore-community-revitalization

Also- was it really a deer? Have you even seen the police report? has anyone? stop assuming! makes an.....
