Military suicide prevention

EDITOR:

Citizens of El Dorado County can help prevent military suicides by committing to the well-being of young people before they enlist. As a military chaplain with peace time and war zone experience, I have worked with service members from all backgrounds — soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard members who thrive from supportive families and communities. Stable foundations lead to stronger people.

Help build up resilient people in the military before they arrive at basic training. Examples:

• Coach youth sports — learning team work and sportsmanship promotes health;

• Volunteer in schools — children need positive adult role models;

• Sponsor your church/synagogue/mosque youth group — a healthy spiritual life is essential for facing the rigors of the military and beyond.

Preventing suicide in the military begins long before men and women join our ranks. This community can build a stronger nation by investing in the lives of people who will serve.

    While all of the writer's comments are lovely community building activities, resilience to the psychological and physical traumas of the current war may simply not be possible for all people. Head injuries, crises in personal morality, extended deployments, and the chemical impact of war all contribute to changing how one can cope. Many of our soldiers joined the National Guard, and then found themselves at war overseas for multiple tours. These are not self-selecting soldiers. As a way to really look at the stressors in the current wars, I thought the We Honor Veterans dot Org site might be helpful and politically neutral. Hospice sees soldiers from America's many wars at the end of their lives, and they've made an effort to discuss issues unique to each population. In addition to the many sites on suicide that the writer could review, this may help expand the writer's understanding of some of the stressors of this war. http://www.wehonorveterans.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3321
