Mountain lions killed in Rescue

EDITOR:

Once again, the California Department of Fish & Game has interfered with our natural wildlife resources without forethought regarding the consequences of their senseless actions. The basic tenet of nature’s prey and predation has again been violated and stymied.

Mountain lions are opportunistic hunters that for the most part in our area prey on weak and sick black tail deer that are incapable of sustaining themselves. Now, who or what is going to pursue depredation on the feeble wildlife in the Rescue area?

The California Department of Fish & Game has acted with impunity by destroying four members of this valuable and scarce wildlife predator colony. This family of mountain lions could have just as easily been darted (sedated) and removed to another area. Better yet, the Gerkin family could invest in a livestock guard dog and/or install electrical fencing (go to Website www.mountainlion.org for more information).

Destroying four mountain lions for one goat is beyond the pale of ludicrous and is undeniably another example of wildlife mismanagement!

A guard donkey was on duty when "Darla" the pregnant goat was killed. She was also area enclosed with a electric fence.

Guess you need another donkey. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. Take the steps to predator proof your livestock area or face the consequences. You moved to an area with wildlife - if you don't protect your livestock, of course you'll encounter a wild animal - not exactly a surprise. But no, lets just kill everything in the surrounding area instead. Great idea..

Interfered with our natural wildlife resources with out forethought? What is your evidence or expertise on this subject Mr Phaler? Could we have some consideration for the grieving kids? You mountain lion lovers come off has both heartless as well as ignorant.

I understand if you catch a lion in your yard disturbing livestock you have the right to shoot it but to hunt a lion after the damage is done and to kill it and it's young is chicken sh:t

Unless your a wildlife biologist who studies deer herd management and lion populations you shouldn't talk. If this was Yukon country I'd understand Phaler's point, but it's not. People live and farm around here, deer get fed more, deer feed lions more.... Lion population experiences growth based on deer population. Issue tags for deer and lions??? maybe
