Not a secular nation

EDITOR:

I’d like to reply to Ms. Medley’s letter “A Secular Nation.”

Dear Ms. Medley,

After reading your letter in the Mountain Democrat, I went online and checked out the percentage of Christians in America, according to Wikipedia at wikipedia.org. In 2012 73 percent of Americans identified themselves as Christian. According to Gallup at gallup.com, 77 percent identified themselves as Christians in 2012. According to the Washington Times at washingtontimes.com, 78 percent of Americans identified themselves as Christians in 2011.

I wonder what would make you think we are a secular nation?

Additionally, according to the Washington Times, Christians make up roughly one-third of the world’s population, or 2.2 billion.

What makes us a secular nation is the Constitution of the United States of America.

Katie Meyer: Though individuals practice a variety of religions -- predominantly Christian -- there is not an established STATE religion. In theory, all Americans are treated equally regardless of religion.

Evelyn, it is good to be Queen. I have another one for you. Perhaps the best written explanation of what we are witnessing I have seen in a while. The only thing the author leaves out is the usefulness of the ignorant masses. http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/12/a_government_separated_from_the_people_cannot_stand.html

Confusion reigns. sec·u·lar /ˈsekyələr/ adjective adjective: secular 1. denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis.---- Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. --- You don't ever want to live in a country that has a government sponsored/mandated religion. Look at how the government mandated religion of leftism has shredded this country and eviscerated the prosperity it created prior to being forced to live under the doctrines of leftism. Even self professed Christians have lost their bearings on the meaning of FREE WILL.

"Look at how the government mandated religion of leftism has shredded this country and eviscerated the prosperity it created prior to being forced to live under the doctrines of leftism. " You are a nutter. Did you write that yourself? If so, you get points for rhetorical flair. But I suspect you picked up most of that verbiage from your echo chamber. You seem to have a lot to say and personally I resent your attempts at dominating these comment boards with your loose-brained regurgitations. But go ahead and keep scoring our national divide with your hyperbolic outrage. Eventually we'll break in two and you can pat yourself on the back for all your hard work.

Benjamin Franklin is given credit for a problem solving technique known as a balance sheet, the Benjamin Franklin Balance Sheet. It is a pro and con chart. Maybe he came up with it maybe he didn't. The idea is to separate a piece of paper in half, 2 vertical columns. On one half you list the pros and on the other half you list the cons. Title one half "capitalism" and the other half "leftism" and list what each one creates, produces, provides, accomplishes, improves, sustains or any other positive prosperity oriented adjective. If you can name something/anything to put in the column under "leftism" you will find if you possess any intellectual honesty that it is fully dependent on the things listed under "capitalism". The point being capitalism without leftism flourishes, expands, provides, prospers, lifts, spreads, creates, improves and most of all, defeats poverty. Leftism on the other hand, without capitalism, shrivels up like a raisin grape in the sun and dies. It cannot even exist without the things provided by capitalism.

Nothing but anguish is the result when an earthly kingdom is intermingled with a heavenly kingdom. The merging of both degrades each. You are in the earth, but you are not of the earth.

Thank you Brian - Cookie hasn't written a new or thoughtful post in years. He/She has become a total bore. BTW,Cookie rails at government so bitterly and personally that it seems he/she must have really been severely abused by said government. Does anyone know what trauma Cookie has personally suffered at the hands of the "leftist" government he/she hates with such vehemence? Does Cookie enjoy such socialistic benefits as Medicare and Social Security? One must assume that he/she has sent back every dime of those commie programs to which he/she might be entitled.

Nobody ever gets the 'last word'. Thank Gawd there are people like Cookie who not only understand leftism, but are willing to say it as often as possible. We are now living under POLITICAL FRAUD. doesn't that register?

    Reply | Report abusive comment
  • cookie65December 14, 2013 - 6:29 am

No it doesn't register with them. They have been trained to believe government is incapable of harming them. In fact the sole function of government in their view is to improve their lives and regulate every facet of it so they can share equal outcomes regardless of effort. Utopia is but one more government agency, one more law, one more regulation away. They will never get it through their coconut husk skulls that liberty and freedom are the most valuable commodity humans will ever experience and how fortunate and lucky they are to have been citizens of this country and not some 3rd world leftist utopia. There are 6 billion people on this planet who would give all their worldly possessions to trade places with them for the chance to live in freedom and prosperity and they are too freeeekin stupid to see what they are sacrificing for some phony make believe sense of bread crumb security which is nothing more than self-imposed slavery. They are a disgrace to those who fought, sacrificed, suffered and defeated tyranny so they could live free and the reason some impoverished, starving, malnourished 8 year old on the other side of the planet thinks freedom is wasted on Americans. They take for granted in their daily lives things that 99% of every soul to ever live couldn't have dreamed of and they have zero appreciation for it. It reminds me of the defense offered for the kid who just got off in Texas because he was a victim of "affluenza", the evolution of victimization. They have enjoyed the spoils and wealth created by this country and have not the slightest clue how it took place.

We are a NATION of people, some 75% of which are Christian. Therefore we cannot be a secular nation. The Constitution keeps religion separate from government, not the people.

What exactly is pathetic? There is no doubt that some on here find the defense of freedom and liberty as pathetic. They aren't even bright enough to realize they are only able to voice their disdain for freedom and liberty because of freedom and liberty. They take stupidity to a whole new level. It was a total waste to provide them with their own brain since all their thinking comes from a collective conscience. Given the opportunity to evolve an independent thought or perspective they will, by behavioral training forfeit to the collective/groupthink. If that is what you find pathetic, then pathetic is a colossal understatement.

I am not interested in you "agreeing" with me. I am interested in you learning how to think for yourself. Pointing out that you don't think for yourself is necessary in that endeavor. Years of dealing with leftists on various topics has taught me you won't realize it with out being showed repeatedly how intellectually lazy you are. It may seem harsh to you but that is only because of just how ignorant you are.
