Placerville’s streets

EDITOR: This is a concern to the city of Placerville and it is about the conditions of our town’s streets.

We encourage people to come and visit our Historical Hangtown of Placerville. Our streets are so bad with conditions that it’s an embarrassment to the locals to have others outside that come here to visit.

The TV stations tell people to go visit the foothill areas.

We are right on Highway 50 for travelers to stop and shop. Then they drive on our bumpy streets that only seem to get worse. Now that Apple Hill will be opening next weekend, I wonder if they will still enjoy driving on the Main Street of Placerville.

Also, the traffic on Highway 50 is backed up on the weekend most of the time to Point View Drive.

Maybe someone will at least redo Main Street soon.

It would be nice if both the city of Placerville and El Dorado County would fair better at fixing roads. It's amazing that counties all around us have nice roads and the tax rates are about the same. Of course El Dorado Hills always seems to have really nice roads...

So how was traffic this weekend? Any backup on Sunday?

Betty Correia: Thank you for writing about the condition of Placerville's streets. Unfortunately, there is not the slightest hint that things will improve within our lifetimes. But the City Manager does say that the Main St. / Cedar Ravine Roundabout remains a City project in the works.

Just slow down, and the bumps in the road smooth out...No to the roundabout! Do the people of this city get a vote on this? If not, why not?

"25 Years ago Sept. 30, 1988 State Department of Transportation to alter Highway 50 lights By TIM WILLIS The state Department of Transportation, in an effort to get Apple Hill season traffic on Highway 50 down the hill faster, will alter the traffic light cycle at the three intersections in Placerville Sunday, a city official announced Thursday afternoon. The current traffic control system at the intersections respond automatically to traffic volume on the highway, on the cross streets and in left-turn lanes, according to a state Department of Transportation official. The Placerville City Council agreed to forward a letter from Ray Balarin to Caltrans that made the following suggestion: “Wouldn’t be simpler to control lights themselves so that any number of cars, one or one hundred, making it (through) the first light in either direction would be assured of getting (through) all the lights instead of stopping 3 times?”

America can go the moon, but America cannot get heavy traffic through Pville.
