EDITOR: I’m remembering the recent Prop 30 TV commercials where Gov. Brown and the “Teacher of the Year” man assured all of us that there will be “tough and strict accountability to make sure all funds will go to the classroom,” “funds can’t be touched by Sacramento politicians” and there will be “annual audits posted on-line.”
One of the really pathetic ads was “A child’s world without Prop 30.”
Anyone can go back and take a quick on-line review of the ads to remind themselves of what was said.
In Prop 30 it states that it “bars the use of funds for administrative costs, but provides local school governing boards the discretion to decide, in open meetings and subject to annual audit, how funds are to be spent.”
Many believe that Prop 30 is a seven-year Band-Aid that will not solve the problems with funding in public education but on the other hand 54 percent of the voters believe that it will. So as a minimum, I do hope that all voters begin to make an effort to hold our politicians and school districts accountable for how these (remember temporary) tax increase monies are used.
If you’re not already involved, please get involved with your school district, go to a board meeting and ask to see where the money is going into the classrooms. There are all kinds of ways to shuffle monies around. Visit the on-line Website to view the annual audit of Prop 30 that the governor said he would provide.
When will we begin to start making our elected officials accountable for what they say and do? By the way, now that we have a Democratic supermajority in the California Legislature you can bet that Senate president Darrell Steinberg (D) will go after more tax increases very soon.

The ucdavis medical school dean is resigning from her $734,000/yr position. That does not include other compensation. How many teachers would that pay for? Anyone who voted for prop 30 is a fool. The problem is we are so outnumbered by the fools. It is an example of just how powerful headlines and 30 second soundbites can be on a dumbdown electorate. They are fed envy, class warfare and all the other leftist tripe everyday and believe themselves to be informed because anyone who says different is a hater.
