Response to letter on Romney’s religion

EDITOR: Mr. Garon does not understand how leadership works in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS “Mormon” Church). Leadership in the LDS Church is by invitation from presiding leaders for a period of time in a certain geographic location.

While Mitt Romney was a bishop in a local congregation of a few hundred members (ward) years ago, he does not now act in that capacity. The same is true of his position as stake president, or supervisor of a group of wards in a local area for a period of time. Church leaders such as Romney are “released” from their positions after a few years, and no longer act in that capacity after their release.

As far as Joseph Smith “borrowing” from Islam, that is just not true. Joseph Smith was called by Jesus Christ as his prophet after praying to know which church to join. Joseph did as he was asked to do by Christ and other heavenly messengers, and brought about the restoration of Christ’s gospel to us in it fullness. He had little formal education, and was only able to translate ancient records (the Book of Mormon) by inspiration from heaven, not by memory. Mr. Garon references disaffected members of the LDS Church to discover the church’s beliefs and practices, rather than researching the actual history of Joseph Smith and asking God to confirm the truth to him, as thousands of members of the LDS Church in El Dorado County, such as myself, have done.
