EDITOR:
James Longhofer’s Aug. 13 letter assertively claims that “voters want to know” about Mitt Romney’s tax returns. After strongly insinuating that Mitt must have something to hide, Mr. Longhofer strangely left out the operative words “desperate attempt to avoid talking about Mr. Obama’s dismal record.” Then in a classic case of projection, he waded in and inferred through dubious innuendo that Mitt was “a dirty little liar.”
So where do we go from here to find out if Mr. Longhofer is incapable of independent thought (as many surely suspect) and is merely the local DNC shill? May I suggest that Senator Boxer (who typically spews the DNC talking points) come forward and support Mr. Longhofer’s contention that Mitt’s sinister and telling omission of the word “income” when stating he paid lots of taxes, is all but certain grounds for all citizens to conclude that Mitt is truly a rascal? Yet Sen. Boxer is silent? That speaks volumes.
Someone is trying to frantically distract Mountain Democrat readers from the issues relevant to this election — namely the performance of the current administration and the current state of the economy. Is it me? Is it Mr. Longhofer? Voters “might” want to know … and then again, they might not.
GLEN E. SELLERS

“Current state of the economy,” I’m doing fine, my college age daughters are on our health insurance having just completed college, we are saving to buy an additional house and my mother-in-law, a proud women almost 90, is almost able to take care of herself with her Social Security /Medicare. Yes, Mr. Sellers, it’s you and the other loyal party members who seem to be determined to divide America. What’s really at the heart of your anger and discontent with the President of the United States who was elected by a majority of the people of this fine country Mr. Sellers?
Worth knowing: IN JERUSALEM SPEECH, IT WAS ROMNEY’S VOICE BUT NETANYAHU’S WORDS – “The casino magnate and owners of the Yisrael Hayom newspaper is considered one of the strongest supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The $100 million that Adelson pledged to donate to Romney in order to get Obama out of the White House is the oil in the wheels of Romney’s election campaign.” @ http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/diplomania/in-jerusalem-speech-it-was-romney-s-voice-but-netanyahu-s-words.premium-1.454521
Why is it that the Reflublicans love to make “character” the main campaign issue, right up until they have a candidate who is being secretive. Then, all of a sudden, they want to campaign on “issues”.
Al – Hypocrisy is an equal opportunity employer. No exclusions based on party affiliation.
The Democraps just don’t want to talk about the issues. Transparent President ~ Ha! Nobel Peace Prize President ~ Ha! Shovel ready jobs ~ Ha!
Democrats WILL be talking about the issues: Mitt’s tax returns and how he somehow got millions into his IRA, plus Ryan’s love of Ayn Rand. I’m the DNC local shill? Oh, wish it were true. For all my Tea/Republicans friends and all distracted MtDemocrat readers — remember that California will go for President Obama, making your beliefs and votes nil. Enjoy your summer and fall.
You will NEVER make my beliefs nor votes nil! Your Dem arrogance, race cards and baseball bats at the polling booths will not work this time.
Who fought for Corporate Tax Breaks? Mr. Longhofer? Mr. Sellers? I sure didn’t. I didn’t ask for tax-breaks to take my business overseas. I didn’t ask for lower-capital gains to keep more of my Hedge-fund trade $$$. Who did? Oh, people — Oh, I’m sorry…. Corporations — like Romney…. or Ryan who OWNS $3 Million Financial Investment Companies….ALL acquired AFTER he won a seat in the HOUSE.[OpenSecrets]…. …. The Tax Returns tells the public where the Candidate’s REAL focus is. (Where they put their money…and not just political spin.)
Typical thought of a Dem who demonizes success but at the same time will give away everything THEY don’t own. I would much rather have a successful candidate with values run my country vs. 2 cash for clunker idiots.
Unfortunately James, you are probably right. Calif. will go Democrat (but not this one). We have plenty of hints coming our way, but people are not paying attention: higher state tax’s, add that to what is coming our way on federal tax’s, more regulations that chase business’s out of the state, gutless politicians refusing to take on the unions, trying to take away prop 13 ( many of us would have lost our homes), and on and on–By now you might have guessed that I’m for smaller government. What? you might ask–how can a democrat feel that way–How about calling it an open mind and not just listening to CNN and our local channels. How about watching CSPAN–Senate, House of Reps, (now that’s an education) talk radio and dare I say FOX
Hey DB, no worries, it’s all good …..Many liberals gush over how California is going to Obama as if somehow California will decide this election, it’s no big deal, California isn’t even a factor in this election….Everyone knows California’s electoral votes always go Democrat, that’s already a given…Fact is, while folks in California are still running around voting, this election will have already been decided by the mid-west and east coast swing-states….And, by the way, all the latest independent polls show Romney has now taken leads in three of the biggest swing states on the map — Florida, Ohio and Virginia and now leads in 11 of the 12 swing states… Florida, Ohio and Virginia alone have a total of 60 electoral votes and these were states Obama was way ahead in just a few weeks ago…That’s a 120 vote swing for Romney, but the Lib’s will just say “Polls don’t mean anything”….And, those who only watch MSNBC, will never hear that anyway, because their too busy being brainwashed to believe America should only be concerned about dogs on cars and Mitt’s taxes, instead of the lack of jobs and our economy hitting rock-bottom…
Mr. Carter — HISTORY Lesson time…. Back in the 1930s California was Republican territory. It was Republicans [progressives] who pushed for the Dams and aqueducts to help the BUSINESS communities… But it was the Democrat FDR who pledged to help BOTH businesses & the people…[back then Dems had the laizzez-faire attitude]…but FDR changed that…. The Depression caused the parties to shift their goals… and Republicans lost hands down for LACK-OF-ANY-ACTION…. Does it look like that again? I don’t know… but it could…
Thanks R.J.. The numbers are looking good as you say. Even though I live in California I’m glad I live in beautiful El Dorado County where the majority of voters are sane.
R.J., you are correct. California is not a swing state, ergo, one has to ask why the rabid emotions of the Tea/Republicans in El Dorado County? It all matters not. Plus, as we have discussed before, the only poll that matters is election day.
On the macro level, it will be a choice of corporations and prejudice versus the people. God save our Republic.
Mr. James E..
It will be an election of the American people vs an obamanation. Your use of the race card is worn out sir.
Mr. Smith, your position that there is no prejudice in America is more than worn out, it
is detached from reality
James E., Mr Smith did not say there is no prejudice in America. Why misrepresent, other than to maintain a useful argument? Read again. His words: “Your use of the race card is worn out sir.” And it is. Are being a loyal Dem. and engaging in honest difference mutually exclusive?
Obama-supporting Democrats avoid talking about his record by claiming the other guy is a racist.
As opposed to GW Bush’s Record of irresponsible spending? or Boehner’s record of lack of Leading? or McConnell’s 396 filibusters to STOP all DEBATES on ANY legislation? or Paul Ryan’s 5 letters requesting Stimulus funds for JOB-GROWTH and then turning around and saying the stimulus fund didn’t create or save jobs? I could go on… but Obama passed the Republican (Romney, Nixon, Sen. Hatch) Health Care…. and OMG — It’s a terrible record….
Fine. Let Obama stand on his record – as you see it. But to hold another point of view doesn’t make one a racist.
Mr./Ms. Voster, I’ll take you at your word — you and Mr. Smith have no prejudices. Now, how about the other 313 million Americans?
James E. – You’re a slippery duck. Or do you actually – gasp – believe that disagreement = racism? (Does being some shade of mellow tan make Obama beyond criticism? Heeeeellp!!!) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t bother responding. This argument has gone beyond exhaustion. Proving, of course, that the charge of racism trumps all. Well done.
Back in “08″ there were 64,385,746 people of all colors including a-hell-of -a-lot of white folks that voted for Obama and got him elected …. Black voters made up less than 12.1%, Whites 76.3% of total voters …..So, let me get this straight, your saying if those same white people that voted for him last time don’t vote for him again, now their bigots???? ….Amazing….
SD – You remind me that pseudonyms have an honorable history. One could say they’re as American as apple pie. Say ‘hello’ to Benjamin!
Always make it personal. If your opponent disagrees with you on an issue, he or she is a bad person–and should be made to realize that fact. If the conversation gets friendly, real dialogue becomes possible. Avoid real dialogue at all costs.
Same old crap…different day..sigh…This coming from me, a racist conservative warmongering jesus loving American…and I Drive a 4o year old Chevy that pollutes the air and I four wheel drive the crap out of the planet……Hot Damn it’s great to be an American!! while I still can…
Gibney, I have great affection for you and R.J. — who said opposites cannot get along past politics. You are Navy and R.J. has our joint memories of Land Park. Great basis for affection. Mr. Voster, of course one can speak against President Obama without being racist. And, he is not above criticism. I am not totally happy with him either. However, if one says they have never lied, they have just told their second lie. And, if they say that they have no prejudices, they have just told their third lie. I won’t comment on your use of mellow tan or Rush’s song about “Barack, the Magic Negro.” You know, I’ve written some about Mitt and Ryan in the paper and on this site — have I ever described them as white? Are ducks slippery? I’ve never touched a duck, so will have to so believe on your report.
I’m more interested in Obama’s sealed college records than I am in Romney’s tax records.
Mr. James E.. Great! It sounds like we’re on common ground now. Revelation ~ We all lie and we all have prejudices. I hope you cringed as I did when our white (by the way~white is not a dirty word) VP Biden said they want to put “ya’ll back in chains”. It’s you Dems that try to keep the prejudices alive for political advantage. I say most hard working American’s do not care what color our great leader is. I think they care about his dismal job performance. I totally agree with Nancy’s letter regarding Obama’s college records. What does this President have to hide? Have a wonderful weekend sir.
Mr. Smith, actually I didn’t cringe. My first thought was being chained up by Wall Street and then when slaves were brought up, I thought of the chain gangs in Georgia. A bit of a stretch to go immediately to slaves, but each to their own. VP Biden could have done it for political advantage, but to what advantage — the controversy? African Americans already vote approximately 90% for Democrats. Was he trying to reach the 10% who vote Republican or don’t vote? Doesn’t make sense to me.
Woops! Sounds like a little white lie to me Mr. Longhofer.
Mr. Smith, you keep using the word white. I’ll respond, but first let me tell you a sad story. Last evening I fell off a ladder, and feeling it slip I flung my body away and hit the ground at full force on my right heel, then rolled on my back and banged my head as it bounced a couple of times off the ground. Head OK, back hurts a bit, but my right heel hurts like the devil. Don’t think I broke my heel bone, so won’t go to the doctor and will suffer the pain for a few days hoping it gets better (this for those who think Medicare recipients go to the doctor for a runny nose). So, what’s my point and how does it relate to racism? It doesn’t and has no racial implications, just a restatement of a rule that when you are old and on a ladder make sure you have someone at the bottom holding the ladder secure. A little white lie? Actually, no, just as I described. What were your thought processes when you heard Barack, the Magic Negro?
Romney is going to”win” in November. This is not a partisan statement; rather, one of logic. Simply connect 2 dots (yes, three would be preferable): 1) Israeli casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson has pledged up to $100M to defeat Obama, and 2) the newly released movie “2016: Obama’s America”.
Before this morning I had not heard of this film. An email from a friend stated her son had gone to see “2016: Obama’s America” last night. The first showing was sold out, so he waited for the second. “He said it was so scary people were sitting on the edges of their seats. He said all of what is on the film is happening right now.” Consider the film’s timing. Consider its message. Having checked the reviews I’ve concluded that it is an insidious propaganda hit piece. Cleverly, the film assumes Obama’s reelection. Costly electioneering has been replaced with a money-spinner that feeds off our ignorance and fears. Absolutely guaranteed that “Obama 2016″ will be vastly more effective than the nightly news, about which people are increasingly skeptical. A film which we PAY to see could never be a propaganda hit piece? And it is showing in a gazillion theaters all across the country. By continuing to argue petty party political talking points instead of issues we are feeding into what lies ahead.
Ms. Veerkamp, don’t count your chickens before they hatch. The people rushing to see this movie
are Tea/Republicans who will already vote for Mitt. Few, if any Democrats or Independents, will go to see it. And, soon a Democrat will see it, parse it, and proclaim it unmitigated BS talking point by talking point. As for the rich guy providing big bucks for propaganda, propaganda only works if it is “reasonable.” Mitt and Ryan and their talking points are unreasonable. I’ve dabbled a bit in propaganda, so trust me.
“I’ve dabbled a bit in propaganda, so trust me.” ~ James E.
Trust me republican style “I think the American people—I hope the American–I don’t think, let me—I hope the American people trust me.»
GWB Washington, D.C., Dec. 18, 2002
I agree with Col Longhofer, Romney seems to be extremely secretive about his taxes which makes me an average independent voter like myself wonder why. Refusing to release any tax returns other than the one for 2010, which revealed he was worth at least $250 million, twice the wealth of the eight Presidents before him including President Obama! And as controversy grows more information surfaces about Mitts wealth, many published report about his offshore accounts put the possibility of his wealth at much more than the originally reported $250,000,000.00, some estimate his wealth could be as high as four hundred million which is not a crime, but makes one wonder about his business dealings and just where did all that money come from. As a political maneuver it kind of makes sense to delay his 2012 tax return to avoid controversy during the primaries and I would guess they will magically appear just before or maybe even after the elections in some form, I can just hear Mitt telling his loyal party members, “trust me”. In contrast to former Republican President Bush who revealed 15 years +- of tax returns with out issue and the Bush family aren’t exactly poor.
Why did it take George Bush so long to produce his military records? Why did it take Barack Obama so long to produce his birth certificate? Why is it taking Mitt Romney so long to produce his tax returns?
Estimates put Mitt Romney’s net worth between 200-500 million, that’s less than half of JFK’s billion dollar net worth….But, were Liberals angry over that or suspicious of how JFK got rich????…Hell no!!!, of course not!!!…It’s all about deflection and diversion from the left…
Mr./Ms. Voster, let me take these one by one and provide my opinion. Bush: Hid military records because he went AWOL to work on a political campaign in Alabama and then declined to take his flight physical because it was a new policy to check for drug use. Could only have gotten away with it but for help from some lieutenant colonels and colonels (who were very aware of his father). Romney: Can be no other reason he doesn’t release other than something in there that would kill his candidacy. Mitt, you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide. Obama: I don’t know for sure, but could it be that it was unprecedented for a president to be asked for his birth certificate? Perhaps some local Tea/Republicans can help me on this one.
R.J., we didn’t worry about JFKs wealth because we knew where it came from: The honorable bootlegging of whiskey, gin, vodka, etc. Hmmm, did they bootleg vodka in the 30s?
