Roundabout? Surely you jest

EDITOR:

Thanks to the Mountain Democrat article of Feb. 12 for alerting us about the El Dorado County Transportation Commission’s utterly stupid idea of a roundabout in El Dorado (as they wouldn’t). With street widening, signal lights would be bad enough, but removing the rural personality from our gold rush era township would be an outrage with a roundabout.

Can you imagine trying to squeeze in a functional roundabout in the tight square corner of Highway 49 and Main Street? We’ve lived with a three-way stop sign intersection for well over 30 years and during that time I’ve experienced many occasions of people pleasantly yielding to others when it wasn’t necessary.

How about an area-wide roundabout? At a few miles in diameter, it would intersect upper Broadway, Pleasant Valley Road, Greenstone Road, Green Valley Road and Cold Springs Road. Then everyone could drive in circles around Placerville, Diamond Springs and El Dorado without stopping.

Q: When you enter a roundabout do you go clockwise or counterclockwise. Something we should learn given the roundabout craze.

James, counter-clock, a series of left turns, I drive Davis a lot, and the right of way goes to who is in circle first/already. Meaning the most aggressive get in, me in Gov truck sit and sit. Blinkers are of no use, if you have your right blinker on is it the first, second, third or forth(U-turn) "exit" do you intend to use. Of course no purpose in left blinker except to confuse. There is a round about with a speed limit of 13 MPH, not 12, not 14 but....

Go Aggies, exactly correct -- counterclockwise. How did I know? Because I'm getting ready to renew my DL and I just know they are going to ask (well, not ask, but on the written).

For those of you who did not grow up here, and want our historic town to look like Folsom, Sac, the Bay Area, etc... please go back to where you come from.... And by the way, thanks for your letter Jim. My sentiments exactly....

At first I thought it would be hard to top the ridiculous idea of a round a bout at Cedar Ravine and Main, Then the El Dorado round a bout hit the paper. I think we need to take a serious look at who we elect to lead.

Maybe we need to roundabout the county and city counsel right out of town......

I am of Peru, many times streets need the stop to save the wrecks, roundabouts can keep the children safe with the traffic - the signs to stop are only a way to save the wrecks

Really a roundabout! Who would design and engineer this, the same person that has designed our Placerville by-pass, our use-less bike lane at Forni rd on hiway 50, or the new on ramp near county building, I don't get it our city street are full of pot holes and have been ignored for 20 years!!

Francisco...I lived in Mexico as a young adult for brief moments in time--in two very different places...roundabouts do not care about the pedestrians--the bigger the roundabout--the less chance of getting to the other side--without running...some even have signals installed for that reason. Here in America--they are also installing signals in some roundabouts...because they are not working well. It was the first of many lessons I learned living in a foriegn place. Cedar Ravine has no problems..yet they want to tear it up...why? why spend the money? and if it doesnt work--also put in signals? Really? One of the other places has buried gas tanks from what I understand. why spend money--they dont have--on something that people dont want? They have taken the city to court...and won . they will do it again. Even more money for the city. The arguement that people go through stop signs--they also go through traffic lights.

Im adding roundabouts to the list of distractions. Gun issues, weed, and roundabouts. <---people will go back to court on this issue. they have said they will petition to ballot. Shaking head...there is no money--why do it? and if there is money--fix the potholes.

James...someone came up with anticlockwise...not sure why...lolololol I like counterclockwise better. Maybe someone wanted to be known for using a "new" tag.

If you want to see Round-A-Bouts in action, go up to Truckee and watch how many near misses and near collisions there are between locals who know the Round-A-Bouts and out of town tourists who have no idea what they just entered into. Placerville will have to own a tow truck and have a police officer full-time associated with the Circle.
