EDITOR:
I thank the Mountain Democrat for the kind article “Iva Heuser takes it to another level” concerning the honor of being named Senior Volunteer of the Year. I accept this honor on behalf the many volunteers who help in so many ways in this county.
There are three statements in the article that I feel need clarification. The first is that, in my role as a volunteer, I have never had anything to do with budget matters. The second is that “as county employees retire they’re being replaced by volunteers.” This is not true. What I said was that as county employees leave a position, the empty position is not always filled, but the duties are spread among other employees. This overloads the staff members and volunteers help by doing the back up work of filing, making copies, folding brochures, assembling pamphlets and training books, stuffing envelopes and much more. Doing these very necessary tasks frees the staff members to spend more time providing the services they are hired to do. The third statement is that I was Kellie’s high school teacher. Not true. I was Kelly’s elementary school teacher and enjoyed every minute of it.

Good for you, Iva, to correct and clarify the misreported facts.
