PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA
99 CENTS

Under protest

EDITOR:

Gentlemen of the State Board of Equalization,

For a second time I am forced to pay the Cal Fire fee under drastically stronger protest. It is genuinely sad and frustrating to have my government reach into my life savings. I am retired and now forced to lower my modest and self-supported standing of living because our public employees cannot perform the same services for the same funds available two years ago.

I have lived in California all of my adult life and I had learned to really love this state. It is discouraging and disheartening to see and be forced to participate in the slow degeneration of a previously admired lifestyle. Perhaps Cal Fire should do as I must now do. That is to perform on a smaller budget.

Your frustration, is fully understood. However, addressing this to the Board of Equalization is preaching to the choir. You need to be talking to your representatives and CalFire. BOE has been tasked to implement the billing and collect the fee. This doesn't mean that any person at BOE likes it. But at BOE it is understood that the agency is tasked with collection of certain monies. Everyone at BOE has a job to do, and they do it, regardless of their opinion of the fee or tax involved. Board Member George Runner has expressed over and over again his dismay and dislike for this "fee". He holds town hall meetings, and advocates for the revocation of this fee. If you really wish to make an impact contact Mr. Runner or your legislate representatives.

Your fire tax is not going to anything remotely connected to preventing or fighting fires. Public sector pension debt and healthcare costs are consuming every last available dime within the state. The city of Stockton is paying 40 cents of every dollar collected toward pensions and healthcare.
