Veerkamp says ‘Thanks’

EDITOR: Now that the final primary election results are in, I’d like to thank District 3 voters for nominating me for the November runoff election. I look forward to the fall campaign and working hard to gain your confidence to be your next supervisor.

If elected, my priorites as county supervisor will be to:

• Continually seek better ways to distribute and save our limited tax dollars. In this new era of far less tax revenues we need to start thinking differently about how Government works.

• Updating our General Plan to protect our rural quality of life, protect our public safety and property values.

* Streamlining the county permit process to help businesses expand and encourage new businesses to locate here.

When I decided to run for county supervisor it was not for the money. If elected, I intend to give the $103,000 (approximate) a year county supervisor salary (inclusive of retirement and medical benefits) back to the taxpayers. I’m fortunate to have earned a pension after serving 30 plus years as a professional firefighter in the county. I’m grateful for this, and now that I’m retired, I want to give more back to the community that I so deeply care for.

BRIAN K. VEERKAMP

But no problem pocketing a quarter of a million (plus medical & other bennies) a year in public money for your pension.

OH MY! What big claws you have, Barbara!!! I nominate you to present your views on retirement compensation reform to all appropriate persons, bodies and boards. Claw-back? Perhaps redirecting your animus from one individual and focusing your energies toward the agencies that set these benefits might be more productive. GO FOR IT, BRIAN. GOOD ON YA!!!

Right on, Phil. Feeding at the public trough is fine, so long as it's a family member!

Ms. Graham, It seems like the issue needs to be addressed more than attacking Mr. Veerkamp for a pension program he did not create. What have you proposed as a solution and to whom?

Do Supervisors really make $103,000.00 a year?

2 things. I learned a long time ago that I would prefer that our politicians actually get paid. Remember Arnold worked for a dollar. And he screwed our state more than he did his house kee... well you get my point. Supervisor for this county is a tough job and I wouldn't want one of ours to be forced to find other creative ways like say political consulting to pay their bills. Second and not referring to Brian or anyone in particular but being 49, I believe retiring at 50 is much too young. I think that they are just reaching their prime. I would like to see all our FD, Police and Prison Guards transfer from their dangerous rigor jobs and maybe place them in school admin or Cal Tran jobs until they reach an acceptable age of say 65.
