Christians adopted it as a birth holiday for Jesus, much to the chagrin of the church.

All religions, Christianity included started from the base of another belief structure. It is called transcendence. Carry over just enough of the old religion, so people will follow your new improved version. Christianity has its roots deep in Paganism; the celebration of Mother Earth.
