Women and Obamacare

EDITOR:

What’s in it for women?

As of Aug. 1, thanks to the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), women will now receive the following health care services with no co-pays, no deductibles and no co-insurance:

1. Annual physicals (called well women visits)
1. Screening for gestational diabetes
3. Testing for HPV
4. Counseling for sexually transmitted diseases
5. Counseling and screening for HIV
6. Counseling on contraceptive measures
7. Breastfeeding support, counseling and supplies
8. Screening and counseling for domestic violence

20.4 million women have received no-cost coverage for other preventive services such as mammograms and Pap smears because of the ACA. Before the Affordable Healthcare Act, over half of women surveyed said they had delayed needed medical care because of the cost.

Women, we need the Affordable Health Care Act.

Most of these services are already discounted at local clinics and some medical offices. Much of this counseling information is already free online. Why does it cost hundreds of millions of dollars to meet the needs of 10.2 million women who delayed spending money on these services?

Hey Patricia, that's great for you! On the other side of the coin (there always is one with Obama) Prostate Cancer screenings for men do not exist. Ever. At any age. As a relatively young survivor (so far) of this disease myself, I can assure you I am not the least bit pleased with the "Affordable" Care Act.

Patricia. How much of that AFFORDABLE care act is going to be used for ILLEGAL immigrates? How much of that AFFORDABLE care act is going to be used for IRS agents to keep you in line? How much money was stolen from Medicare to help pay for that AFFORDABLE care act? How much has the Obama government exceeded their original budget for the AFFORDABLE care act? How many ABORTIONS will be performed and paid for by the AFFORDABLE care act? How many POLITICANS will participate in this wonderful AFFORDABLE care act. OBAMACARE is not the answer!

NO CITIZEN OF THE US SHOULD HAVE ANYTHING FOR FREE!!! Least of all the prospect of HEALTH! Are you guys kidding? Your argument that an illegal might get care??? Is that a reason to keep US Citizens form getting care? No, have a way to supply it to citizens and bill non-citizens, sort of like how EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD DOES! No screening. Lie... read the recommendations for yourself. DB, every woman is going to drop their method of contraception in favor of FREE ABORTIONS. Much easier to got have a medical proceedure than take precautions. I am sure the preventative care will be better for US Citizens.

For reasons I cannot fathom, the idea that healthy citizens, free from the idea that the next illness may put them in the poor house, is beyond the understanding of right wingers. And I don't even want to bring up the Christian part about loving thy neighbor and the rest of it that right wingers are so fond of quoting..

Could it be greed as to possible increased taxes, and also fear that their own health care will be impinged by all the additional "freeloaders" getting health care? A dog eat dog world in the Tea/Republican universe.

James: Deciphering humans is nearly impossible. We all need to have our behaviors validated and Reagan validated greed, as you point out, selfishness and hypocrisy on a scale not seen before. Finally, the Republicans could still quote Scriptures but behave without a moral compass: their hero said it was OK. How long can they worship at the altar of "ME, ME" without ever looking at "WE WE". Listen to Christie's Tuesday's speech: he said the word "I" 37 times and "WE" twice, if that many. And he's the coming GOP star....

Ms. Burke, isn’t great that now you and others will get all these free services. Unfortunately, these services are not free. Someone must pay the providers. So that is either me, your neighbor, your rich uncle, you yourself or all of the above. The sad part is that payment will be guaranteed to be higher than it is now. Why? Because there are now more people and institutions involved including the IRS. There is more paper to shuffle. As a result, costs will go up. So your free service ends up not free. There was and is a need for reform in the healthcare business. The issue that most have is that costs are rising too fast. As a result, fewer people who wanted insurance and/or healthcare could not afford it. It would have been great if ObamaCare addressed these issues but it did not. Instead it added more mandates, taxes, regulations, bureaucrats, tax agents, etc. None of these address the cost issues. Lawyers are still free to sue for millions. HSA and FSA plans are now more restrictive. Medical deductions on income taxes now must meet a higher threshold. We have now lost the freedom to not participate in commerce without penalty should we decide to go insurance free. So thank you for trading my freedom and my tax money for your free exams, abortions contraceptives, breast feeding supplies (I though God provided these), etc. Many in this nation have their priorities wrong. Instead of buying that case of beer, bottles of wine, the latest fancy phone, or that large flat screen TV, pay for your own contraceptives and annual checkups.

Patricia, the key words here are SCREENING and COUNSELING. Notice that the word TREATMENT is not present. Women might be "screened" but who is going to pay for the "treatment"? Most of the information provided in counseling is available online over the internet accessible from your own home. The inappropriately named Affordable Health Care Act lists these services as if women are actually going to get something for free. Women look at "screening" and think that includes "treatment". Watch out for the word playing or you could be misled. There is nothing about the AHCA that is free.

Phil and Nancy illustrate so well the blind side of right wingers. Both persons assume, for example, that everyone has access to internet or that all the info they need is readily available. What world do these people live in? Most people in the U.S. do not have internet: over 70% of older Americans don't nor do most poor people--neither group can afford it. Those are the folks most in need of 'screening'. Yes, 'screening' is not 'care' but it sure is a hell a lot better than nothing. I am sure Phil and Nancy claim they're upstanding Christians, too.
