While watching Channel 13 news the other night I was set aback with a story regarding our D-2 Supervisor Ray Nutting receiving some $70,000 of Prop. 40 money from Cal Fire to clear brush off his own land.
Ray was recorded burning a brush pile and was unrepentant on taking the money. The announcers acted annoyed by a politician taking money. But so what?
What I was blown away with was the Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant, who was happy to be recorded saying that the money was justified and it is a very small price to pay for fire prevention.
The story reported that 297 people around the state received funding benefiting from the $2.5 billion dollar Prop. 40 bond measure. That comes to $841,000 per person? To clear brush? Off their own property? That California taxpayers are funding? And Cal Fire views this as a successful program? Throw in the fact that the $2.5 billion will actually cost the California taxpayer $5 billion?
Reminding me that Cal Fire is the same state organization that is charging me an additional tax of $150 per dwelling per year on my property, I’m blown away.
For when a conservative politician in a conservative county gets his hand caught in the cookie jar and no one is even embarrassed — hell, that in all, actually seem proud — then our form of government is in far worse shape then I thought.
