MIKE GOULIAN stands in front of his Extra 330SC aerobatic airplane performing his aerobatic routine before flying. Goulian is a past United States Unlimited Aerobatic champion and has raced in the Red Bull Air Race Championship series. He is one of the foremost aerobatic pilots in the world.
KYLE FRANKLIN flies his Demon-1 biplane known as Dracula. While it resembles a Waco (an acronym for Weaver Aircraft Company), it is a one-of-a-kind aircraft that took nine years to build and features full span ailerons on both wings giving it a roll rate of over 300 degrees a second. The tail in the photo is a parked F-86 Saber Jet.
THE AEROBATIC performance of Mike Goulian is shown with the pilot in his Extra 330SC plane, designed by Walter Extra of Germany. It is of carbon fiber and steel tube construction and Goulian had a hand in its development. It is powered by a 580 cubic inch six cylinder Lycoming engine of 350 hp. Roll rate is 420 degrees per second.
THE SNOWBIRDS Demonstration Team 431 Squadron is made up of serving members of the Canadian Forces. While they have been in existence since 1942, it wasn’t until July of 1971 that they gave their first public performance. For 2013, their theme is “The pursuit of Excellence,” commemorating two milestones: 70 years as a squadron and 50 years flying the same jet, a Canadian CT-114 Tutor, an advanced jet trainer.
