STELVIO PASS — At 9,045 feet Stelvio Pass is highest (paved) and most renowned of all European mountain passes. It is located in the Italian Alps just 200 meters from the Swiss border about 15 miles northeast of Livigno. Originally built from1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire, it has 60 hairpins, but the extremely difficult 48 turns on the northern side are numbered with stones.
