2010 bike plan has ambitious list

By From page A11 | March 20, 2013

Transportation planner Jerry Barton named several El Dorado Hills representatives who helped create the commission’s 2005 Bike Transportation Plan, and others involved in its 2010 update.

Barton recapped the three classes of bike trails and typical cost per mile:

• Class I — a separate paved and striped path: $400,000 to $1 million-plus
• Class II — a 4-foot paved, signed and striped addition to the roadway: $25,000 to $300,000
• Class III — lightly trafficked local roads that connect destinations: $3,000 to $150,000, depending on shoulder widening

The commission’s mission is transportation, not recreation, he said. Grants are awarded to projects that “reduce automotive traffic by connecting communities and activity centers.” Barton said. Having a school on the route helps.

The plan identifies more than 100 potential bike route projects on the Western Slope, nine of which are deemed priority. Seven of the nine are located in El Dorado Hills but only two of the nine have been funded (one in El Dorado Hills).
