A woman fought off a kidnapper, enabling law enforcement to arrive at her apartment and take the man into custody April 30.
Placerville Police Department received a 911 call from an apartment at 2838 Schnell School Rd. at 8:03 a.m., a press release stated. The caller stated than an unknown man was in her apartment, threatening to take her 15-month-old daughter. Police dispatch was told she was struggling with the man.
Three minutes later, PPD and El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the man still inside the apartment. They quickly took him into custody.
Jason Wayrynen, 44, followed the caller into the apartment, where he focused his attention on the woman and the 15-month-old. He forcibly took the girl from her mother and held the child to the ground.
The mother fought back and was able to wrestle her daughter away from Wayrynen. She secured her daughter in a bedroom, where other children in the apartment were already hiding. She fought him off and closed the door, holding him at bay until officers arrived.
Wayrynen was booked into county jail on charges of kidnapping and burglary with a bail of $250,000.
After he was arrested, his DNA was collected and sent to Calavaras County “as a matter of procedure,” said PPD Capt. Mike Scott. “Nothing has come of it,” Scott said, but they are still hopeful.
They hope for a match for the mysterious murderer of 8-year-old Leila Fowler. They sent the DNA “based on some similarities” and that it’s “a shot in the dark, but it’s something.” Both suspects, Scott said, were unknown intruders who had an intent of harming children.
“Both (cases) are very bizarre,” he said.
As for Wayrynen, “Our community is safer knowing this individual is in custody,” he said.
