The city of Placerville is seeking local residents who have a desire to serve their community in a volunteer capacity, for appointment to its advisory committees and commissions. The city is accepting applications to fill positions on the Planning Commission, Recreation and Parks Commission, Community Pride Committee, and Historical Advisory Committee. Application forms are available online on the City’s Website at cityofplacerville.org , and at City Hall, 3101 Center Street.

Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk’s office by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. The City Council will interview the candidates in mid-February with appointment tentatively scheduled for the Feb. 26 council meeting.

Two full, four-year terms of office and one unexpired term of office are available for appointment to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission makes land use decisions consistent with policies and plans formally adopted by the City Council. Planning commissioners weigh the professional input given in staff reports, environmental impact reports and consultant reports in making decisions. The Planning Commission meets twice each month on the first and third Tuesday at 7 p.m. Two full terms of office are available for appointment and both seats must be held by city residents. One unexpired term of office is available and that individual may be either a city resident, or a primary business owner within the city and live within the Community Region. If you are unsure of the boundaries of the Community Region, please contact the city clerk at 530-642-5531.

Two full, four-year terms of office are available for appointment to the Recreation and Parks Commission. This commission is advisory to the City Council in all matters pertaining to parks and public recreation, and the commission cooperates with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of sound park and recreation planning and programming. Both seats must be filled by city residents. The commission meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.

The Community Pride Committee reviews and make recommendations to the City Council on garden and landscape beautification efforts and public art on City property. Members must be residents of El Dorado County.
The Historical Advisory Committee is advisory to the Planning Commission with respect to identification, development and preservation of historical resources. One city resident seat is available for appointment. The committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. and more frequently as needed.

Excuse me, but why are non-city residents able to serve on city commissions. It seems reasonable to me that Placerville residents should sit on these commissions and committees.

Almost every City Committee or Commission does require city residency. The exception to that is the Community Pride Committee which is primarily responsible for the maintenance of adopt-a-spots in the downtown and other beautification projects on City property. It is not felt that a desire to garden or help maintain a city property should be limited to city residents only. The Planning Commission does allow for a minority of seats (2) to be held by business owners in the city limits as long as that individual also lives within the community region. The community region slightly expands the city limits and "rounds off" some of the irregular city/county boundary lines. Those two Planning Commission seats may also be filled by residents. The majority of the Planning Commission must be City residents.
