A young Placerville couple are homeless after a flash fire burned their 40-foot trailer to the ground on June 19 around midnight.
Allene Carlson, 29, said she went to sleep with a candle burning near her bed. She awoke to find the trailer on fire and filled with smoke.
Her partner, Mike Kerr, 35, was outside at the time walking their dog. When he saw the smoke, he ran inside and tried putting out the fire with a blanket but it had already spread and was burning so hot they were forced outside. Luckily, neither was injured.
While they waited for the fire department to arrive, Mike tried using a hose on the fire but with little success. By the time three fire trucks, Sheriff’s deputies and an ambulance pulled up, their trailer was almost burnt to the ground and all the firemen could do was keep the fire from spreading.
Meanwhile small explosions were going off as the tires on the trailer exploded, as did a bottle of propane and a gas can that was 10 feet away from the trailer.
“I’ve lost everything,” said Carlson. “My grandmother passed away recently and everything she left me burned up along with my I.D., birth certificate and cash from my most recent paycheck. We literally got out with only the clothes on our backs.”
As upset as the couple is about losing everything they own except a car, they are equally upset about the way they were treated by a Sheriff’s deputy at the scene.
They said that one of the firemen asked them to move their car so they could move one of the fire trucks. But when Kerr went down to the car, one deputy asked him for his I.D. and questioned whether either of them was on probation or on parole.
“She’s hysterical over what’s happened and this deputy had this real cold attitude. And I asked him, why does this matter?” said Kerr.
According to Kerr, when he moved towards his car the deputy told him, “You stay right here until I’m through talking to you.”
Kerr then told the deputy he had been asked to move his car by the fireman. The deputy responded by telling Kerr to take his hands out of his pockets and to stay where he was while he ran their names. Meanwhile, the fireman again asked Kerr to move the car.
The deputy then asked if he could search their car. “Meanwhile my house is burning down,” said Kerr. ”He (the deputy) trashed the car. Everything in the glove compartment box was thrown on the floor. Everything in the side pockets of the car were turned upside down. It was totally unnecessary. We’re watching everything we own burn to the ground and we’re being treated like we did something wrong. At one point the deputy even threatened to arrest Allene and impound the car. How we were treated can happen to anybody.
Once the fire was put out, everyone left. “One of the firemen asked if we had anywhere we could go,” Kerr said. “We didn’t, so we got in the car and slept there.” The next morning they went to a friend’s house and starting making calls to service agencies.
The couple is grateful for the help they received. Green Valley Church gave them some clothes and a box of food. The Red Cross helped by putting them up in a motel for three days and giving them a credit card that was good for food and clothing.
“The volunteer from the Red Cross was very nice,” said Carlson. “That’s the only help we’ve received so far.”
Friday Kerr went to Health and Human Services and filled out the paperwork for food stamps but they haven’t heard back yet.
“We’ve called just about every help line there is in the area,” said Carlson.
“We have a dog. If we had a child, probably a lot more resources would be offered,” said Carlson. “I’m glad we don’t have a child to have to go through this.”
In a follow-up call to the Sheriff’s Department, Lt. Tim Becker, who is a spokesperson for the department, said that it was difficult to know if the deputy acted appropriately or not without knowing all the circumstances. He advised the couple to contact the department and make a formal complaint so the incident can be fully investigated.
The deputy in question was contacted but failed to return a phone call about the incident.

This raises the question of who is legally in charge at a fire.
In the KnowJune 28, 2012 - 5:17 pm
The Sheriff's Department should start their own investigation into the actions of their Deputy, common sense doesn't apply here? How can anyone condone the actions of this Jr. Deputy, are you kidding me to do what was done to a VICTIM and to threaten them is enough to cause the Sheriff to jump start an investigation. No training, knowledge or brain and he is what is supposed to protect and help in these types of scenes. He might as well just threw a can of gas on the fire and walked away, take action Sheriff now.
Arnold LangeJune 28, 2012 - 7:25 pm
"The deputy in question was contacted but failed to return a phone call about the incident." Dawn, what is the deputies name? Maybe Intheknow can tell us since he seems to know so much about his lack of training? I suspect the deputy is just a hot head or maybe there is more to the picture.

Meth lab in trailer = fire
Fact checkerJune 28, 2012 - 8:33 pm
Maybe some judging law enforcement should check public records at Eldoradocourt.org before making comments about the actions of the Deputy Look these winners names up under case index. Or maybe just look close at the picture, a neck tattoo that says "5150". Give me a break. Sometimes there is more to the story.
Jessica Running BearJune 29, 2012 - 2:25 am
To those if you who are judging my friends based on stupid thoughts you can just govlook at yourself in the mirror. Cooking meth=fire??? 5150 tattoo?? First and foremost these are people in our community. Second dont judge a book by its cover. These people need help. What would you want done if this tragic accident happened to you?
Jaybox HolmesJune 29, 2012 - 9:51 am
I can't imagine anything worse than having your home burn down, but ummm, burning candles at the end of June just doesn't seem to square up. Also, what does the reporter mean by Kerr being her "partner"? Are they in a business venture together?
Mike KerrJune 29, 2012 - 1:05 pm
To those of you leaving rude comments about this story.....first of I am a tattoo artist and have a passion for body art, the tattoo on my neck has nothing to do with our home burning to the ground. And the candle being lit at the end of June???? What the, hell is wrong with that? The meth lab comment was real clever by the way, sorry not all of us come from wealth and god forbid a couple has a hard time with money in todays economy and have to live in a trailer while starting a life together. My "partner" Allene meaning my girlfriend and I were trying to start over and save money to move into a new place. Who are you to judge us. Why dont you post these comments using you real name if your such a better person than I ? Pretty weak and coward like to speak in public with a bag over your head dont you think.......

Not saying the Dep was right or wrong but can't help noticing you didn't deny the Meth accusation. I have ink as well, but if you tat 5150 (WIC) you ask for grief. It's common sense dude. You have tagged yourself to be an idiot the Deps will check EVERY time. No disrespect but, seriously? Your generation needs to grow up.

Now we judge people by their Tattoos, forget "Protect and Serve" or "Help the Victim" and yes it's the training received or lack thereof. Common sense would tell anyone to assist and not threaten when it is a total loss absent any illegal activity, but why think that way when you don't have all the facts.
Doc HolidayJune 29, 2012 - 2:31 pm
Peeps tat themselves as a freedom of expression. I have no issue with that. BUT, if I had a tat reading 5150 I would have to expect Law Enforcement or others to judge me. Yes, judge me, for that is what I can expect from the ink I display. It IS what it IS. Deal with it...accept the judgement..and get over it. OR, don't ink yourself up with such opinions. Plain and simple.
clip24June 29, 2012 - 2:41 pm
Well, I just googled 5150. It's the name of one of Van Halen's biggest Album, it't the name of a Snowboard Co., it's the name of an energy drink, it's also an athletic challenge website. So sinister! But regardless, what does the man's tatoo have anything to do about the uncompassionate treatment from a deputy. If the deputy had cause for suspicion, he could waited till the stressfull and heartbreaking situation at hand was dealt with first.

Criminally insane CA State code 5150. I have that tatoo also. Means you are ready to go balls out

I'm so very sorry that this has happened to these two. Fires happen from many causes, not just meth labs. And they happen to anyone; No one is exempt. It is unfair to use such judgement against them because they have tattoos, live in a trailor, aren't married, etc. Get a grip people, have some compassion!Negative comments do nothing but show how judgemental some people in our community can be. I hope they receive all the help that they need to recover and move on. God Bless.

Welfare Institutions Code Section 5150- When any person, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself, or gravely disabled, a peace officer,....,may,upon probable cause, take or cause to be taken, the person into custody.... Many gangsters, bad guys self identify themselves as 5150. The Deputy was at an incident of a very hot trailer fire with popping sounds and small explosions. When the owner of the trailer goes to his vehicle to move it, the prudent Deputy stops him. Now what would you be saying if he just let him drive off in his car and it was a meth fire? Hmm? Rude? Well when you self-identify yourself as 5150 expect people to take you at your word.
P. ColostiniJune 29, 2012 - 4:35 pm
I'm sorry you lost your home, that totally sucks, but.... Don't blame the damned cop if he was stern with you in order to figure out what's going on. If you look like somebody that just got out of San Quentin, be prepared for cops to be on alert, and to bark orders at you until you comply. For all the responding officer knew, there could have been a trailer full of murdered people inside, and you go jumping into your car. He's got mere seconds to size up the situation when arriving on scene, and your profuse body art, fair or not, puts him on high alert. On a semi-unrelated note...Judgmental? What kind of a load of crap is that? People nowadays get in trouble so damned much, because they aren't "judgmental" enough!!! Being judgmental means you UTILIZE YOUR JUDGMENT!!!! This phrase "Don't be judgmental" is a panty-waist, sissy, feel-good buzzword, designed to make you sound enlightened when you parrot it. IT DOESN'T! The crux is this: if you use your body as a billboard to advertise just how "5150" you are with creepy neck tattoos, people (law enforcement in particular) are going to use their better judgement and look at you with an air of suspicion, and rightly so. It's unfortunate that this intersected with a tragic life-event. And by the way, my house is hotter than the hobbs of hell in the summer as it is. Burning candles would be the furthest thing from my mind.
How sadJune 29, 2012 - 4:27 pm
How sad for people to judge someone because they have tattoos and live in a trailer. A home is a home where ever and whatever it may be. My mother lives in a trailer, does this mean she is a meth user? NO, she is having a hard time and needed to find somewhere cheaper to live. Don't judge a book by its cover. And just so you know, I have candles going in my house all year long. It is sad that something like this happened to these people and they have all of you judging them. I am sorry for your loss Mike and Allene and if there is anything you may need and have a place we can drop stuff off at, please let me know!
Public knowledgeJune 29, 2012 - 4:37 pm
I agree with the fact that the sheriff had some bad timing but in any such event I would assume the sheriffs department would automatically investigate the cause of the fire and also look up the people residing there in case they did have a drug history. For anyone else that looks at the sheriff website, you would have seen she got arrested for possession of a controlled substance just days after this incident. Pretty suspicious if you ask me. Maybe we shouldn't be feeling so sorry for the way they were treated..... I'm glad our sheriffs do their job and question any suspicious circumstance. Maybe next time they will just use a little empathy as these two did lose everything.
Jen A.June 29, 2012 - 5:03 pm
I can understand both sides. The police have a right to be suspicious especially when so many people do things like this intentionally. However, it is a sad situation, and I know our community will help them out. Let everyone know what you need.
Public recordsJune 29, 2012 - 5:16 pm
Maybe the sheriff had bad timing but it is an investigation as to why the fire started and I would assume that would be a normal practice to run the residents records to see if they had a history of drug abuse. There are so many meth house fires unfortunately alot of the time It's the first thing your mind goes to. I kinda wonder myself considering the girl got arrested days later for possession of a controlled substance with 2 prior conviction enhancements.... Kinda makes you wonder right? Maybe the sheriff just needs a little bit of empathy of the situation but good for him for doing what he gets paid to do!
John StevensJune 29, 2012 - 11:19 pm
So many experts. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew appear to alive and well in our county. Structure on fire. Fire and rescue personnel on scene. Did the deputy have a radio? I understand that dispatchers can be helpful when law enforcement needs to communicate - even with other public safety agencies at the same scene. There is a tremendous disparity on how people in this community are treated by our sheriff's dept; far more common than some of you wish to admit. The fire personnel at the scene probably had a very good public safety based reason to request that the car be moved. Not sure the deputy's authority completely trumps the fire agency. But I'm just guessing here. Besides, why worry about a structure fire. Just ask Colorado. A person having tattoos, no matter what they say, does not minimize or change the danger that existed with the fire and explosions. The fire is just as hot and just as dangerous. Try to remember that we live in a fairly high risk area when it comes to fire danger. Fire personnel are highly trained to contain and suppress a fire. Sometimes they need for vehicles to be moved, if possible and not a threat to the fire suppression efforts. Lt. Becker, looking forward to your investigative efforts. Just curious if the deputy in question in this matter is the same deputy that did not "un-winterize" the department's boat used to transport homicide and crime scene staff (and all of their equipment) to a recent murder site on an island in the middle of a local lake. This would be the boat that just about sank, in the middle of the night, because it had not been prepped for spring/summer use. That deputy is probably highly trained too. The key here - communication. Did the deputy attempt to communicate or confirm with the other agency on scene? Was he the only sheriff, chp, or peace officer on scene? Did he/could he have requested back-up? Did he not believe the fire was a public safety issue? For the record, I am not anti law enforcement. I have numerous family members that are active and retired law enforcement. Not one has, does or wishees to work for this sheriff's department - former administrations included. I'm usually first to speak in support of law enforcement securing a scene. Looking forward to the rest of the story. Maybe this can be the first topic for the incoming grand jury.

It looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, even quacks like a duck! But im sure these ducks will turn their lives around and become productive members of this community after this unfortunate incident... oh wait a minute, Nope I was wrong! I must be 5150 to think that could happen! The only reason this story is in the paper is so these wolves can pray off the unknowing sheeple in our community.
Arnold LangeJune 30, 2012 - 9:34 am
If they are both on parole, then it means they have served their time and they deserve the opportunity for a new start. If the gal was re-arrested for meth, well, that is an indication of just how insidious the meth problem is. Facts are; Trailer burns to the ground and in typical COP fashion, the victims are made out to be criminals. BTW, If they were cooking meth or even had the raw materials in the trailer, the 'popping' of the propane tank and gas can would have been drowned out by the massive explosion that would have occured. Sad to be reafirmed that EDC is filled with a lot of judgemental(before any proof of anything is in) cold hearted people. On the subject of tattoos, I don't have any, I am not fond of them, but I realize it is now fashionable to have tattoos. The cops of course like to use tattoos as a method of PROFILING, just like they used long hair to pass judgement back in the 60's.

I really disgusted at ready some of the remarks on this blog. First of all, do any of you cruel people know this young couple? How can you judge someone because they have body art? This is really sad. To the reporter of this story, I didn't like the way you wrote this story. 1. Exactly where was the fire? 2. What fire dept. responded? 3. Has a fund been set up to get donations to help these kids out? To all of you narrow minded people who cannot even use your real names, I believe in Karma and what goes around comes around. Ignorance, pure ignorance. To this young couple, hang in there, things will get better, pay no attention to these people. They apparently have nothing better to do with their lives but to pass judgement on others.

Wow...... pure ignorance coming from the state of california. I would hate to live in a community full of such hatred. You people are horrible. I live in the DC. Metro area. the story was written to generated social discord. Meth is a devastating reality in our community with a culture of its own. When did 35 and 29 become classified as children? Where are they employed? To Ms Rogers and Mr Lange I ask you to give this couple some life learned advice as what you would do if you were in their situation. At this point and time they need your help and advice as what to do next.
Joe MommaJuly 01, 2012 - 1:47 pm

DoloresJuly 01, 2012 - 9:52 pm
I'm with the woman who doesn't like how this article was written. Isn't this supposed to be news reporting? Just the facts ma'am. It sounds like there was no time for the cops to communicate with each other about why the car was being moved. If it seemed like a person involved with the situation could have been trying to leave, of course they would be stopped and questioned. There is nothing about the tattoo in the story, only among the posters comments. If I was to submit this story in a college writing class (journalism, English or anything other than CREATIVE WRITING) I would probably get a C- at best, most likely a D. It reads more like a persuasive article meant to drum up donations for the couple, one of whom didn't have the common sense to put out the candle before retiring. Some ladies in Sacramento had a similar situation a few years ago, leaving their small children in an apartment with burning candles. Nothing to do with tattoos, just negligence.

I happen to know this man in the article and he has kids he never took care of. He uses drugs, he steals from anyone he can including close friends and has used everyone that has come across his path! This is KARMA! You "worked for what had in that trailer" - how does it feel to be taken away without your control? As for her- she's just someone who will support him. The contributions will most likely just support their habits. You got what you deserve Mike. Worry about your daughter before you worry about that dog and try not to rob your buddies house when you start a new life.....
Mike KerrJuly 04, 2012 - 9:11 am
Im amazed on how pathetic some of these comments are, "disgusted with kerr".......please do explain your great knowledge of my relationship with my 13 year old daughter, actually why dont you just explain how you know me and who you might be. I know that I for one am not a drug addict, I will be the first to admit that I have struggled with addictions as have approx 35-40% of the worlds population. Anyone who knows me will tell you I have never been a thief, but I would really like to know who this buddy is that I robbed....But like the rest of the bored ass, too much time on their hands people that have rude ignorant comments about this story.....please show some pride and backbone behind speak, I think if you felt 110% of what your writing was true you would not hide behind your online mountain democrat handle. Tell me who you are if you know me so well ! Its one thing not to like me but to make me out to be this bad person because my house burnt down???? I think its funny that I rent so much space in your head. Jtac and Arnald Lange you should maybe consider doing your homework before stating your witty two cents, I have never been to prison nor am I on parole or arrested or convicted for a drug charge so please spare everyone from your ignorance. Joe Momma.....who the hell asked you anyways.....lame, The intent of us bringing our story to the mountain democrat was not for people to give us money or feel pity for our situation. Our goal was to thank the American Red Cross volunteer and his wife that went out of their way to make sure we had a place to sleep and shower for a few days following the fire. Secondly to expose the Deputy Sheriff that treated us so poorly that night. All of you that are hung up on the fact that I have a tattoo on my neck that says 5150 should consider the fact that the deputy was rude long before he even had a chance to see the tattoo and when he followed my girlfriend to her car so she could move it after the second time requested by the fireman, the other deputy said to me "wow Im sorry he treated you that way, I hope you know not all cops are like that". I myself dont care if its the President of the United States or a Denny's waitress, If I feel someone is talking to me in a rude fashion and abusing their job or badge, I think I have the freedom to expose it. You come at me with a attitude expect it back. Doing your job does not mean be a a*****e and treat people like dirt ! And as you all should know by now there was no investigation into as how the fire started or if drugs were involved or who is responsible and at fault. I lit a candle because my girlfriend was sleeping and had to work the following day, in the matter of a few minutes as I took our dog outside to go to the bathroom the fire had started. You people that have nothing better to do than sit on your ass and slander our names need to get a damn life. Cowards.

I think this is supposed to show us compassion not judgment on how a person looks ,I have seen people who are meth addicts and this couple is nowhere in that demographics as the article states the propane exploded because of the fire anyone who has a propane tank gets how it could explode as far as tattoos when will people grow up and understand there is a broad span of people who appreciate body art , if a person were to meet me they would never know how tattooed I am or educated as far as pitbulls I have one too and she is a great dog and gentle its the ignorant idiots out there that give them a bad wrap because they mistreat the breed . As a community we should focus on helping one another in their time of need because you never know it may be you having to go through the same thing. Compassion and understanding goes a long way.

If anything, I was pointing out the poor job the writer of the article did in giving facts and also pointing out that those commenting here are making all sorts of claims about you based on zero knowledge because of how you look. I never said you were on parole or anything else. Others did.

This is the second time the "victim" of the trailer (meth) fire has been listed on the el dorado sheriff's 48 hour booking sheet for either meth or narcotics since the fire. Me thinking the deputy wasn't too far off in searching these winners. The facts are the facts and they are all public record. Take a look even closer at the public record, prior prison term, new felony with pending felony, felony bail enhancements. Sounds like she is probably subject to search any time day or night, trailer on fire or not. And for good reason. I would think twice before enabling this duo with "donations" of cash or pawnable property or recyclable metals.

Per the above public record copied from the Sacramento county public court ace index system, Mr. Kerr is on gs (general searchable) probation for 3 years. Sorry Mr. Kerr but you agreed to be searched until 2013 according to the above records. There are also numerous criminal case number on the el dorado county public court records system as well. My fingers are tired for now. Maybe the paper should do a simple public records search before printing articles which appear to attempt to drum up support for convicts. Google is your friend.

While you are all condemning every person that gets arrested and print off the booking sheets etc., why don't you print the recent arrest of the retired lieutenant from the sheriffs department for a 273.5??? That would be for assaulting his wife.

Live by the Golden Rule. Regardless of Allene & Mike's past history, the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics entitles them to the same treatment & Constitutional rights as any other citizen. In part it says "As a Law enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice."

Dear Mr. or Mrs. Just say no to drugs, I will say this once again......we are not asking for any donations and why dont you post your full name and age so I can look up any dirt on you and share it with the rest of the county ???? "YOU" and "Public Records and Google are your friends" must be model citizens......and for the record, the PC 243 and PC 245 charges are for beating up a guy that physically assaulted my girlfriend at the time and when I confronted him about it he physically assaulted me as well. I guess he bit off more than he could chew cause he got what he had coming and the cops were called. The charges were dropped to Mis. Battery. I guess some people would rather call the cops on a guy that physically assaults your girl, Any REAL MAN would handle it himself dont you think??? I hope all you that have posted comments and put our arrest records on blast for everyone to see feel better now. I didnt see anything in the story that asked for every bored a**hole in the county to make us look bad because our house burnt down. People make mistakes in life just as you have as too Im sure. So get a life people, stop making a already crappy situation any worse. Arnold Lange I apologize for my comment directed to you, I may have mis-read what was written.

Mike...For what it's worth, I'm behind you and your girlfriend 100%...I wish you all the best, and just seeing your picture, I have no doubt you two will get through this setback in your life just fine....Don't pay any attention to the negative folks out there...Some folks just always look for excuses to hate and bring down others..

Buncha Hater here Mike. They have nothing better then to throw stones. Don't let them bother you. Cowboy is right about them. Take care and best of luck.

Mike, you don't owe anyone explanations. Try to rise above it and move forward rather than giving these fools fuel for their fire. Somehow you & Allene will find is a silver lining to this storm cloud of vitriol.

This couple is not innocent in their choices in life.I would question all intentions of their actions in this fire. The deputy was acting appropriately if you knew their criminal past.
