The Cowboys and Cornbread celebration is looking for the finest chili and salsa cooks in El Dorado County.
Want to prove your chili is the hot stuff? On Saturday, July 21, at Rainbow Orchards in Camino the Cowboys and Cornbread celebration includes a chili cook-off and salsa contest.
Champions are selected by popular vote. Chili winners get $250 for first, $100 for second, and $75 for third place. Salsa winners get $50 for first and $25 for second. Last year’s reigning champion, Cowpatty Cake Co. and their victorious chili will be there to fight to keep their title.
Entrants should have their spaces set up in the barn by 9 a.m. to begin cooking. Contestants must bring all supplies they may need for cooking, including pop-up tents for shade. About 3 gallons of chili and a half gallon of salsa should be made. (After all, it’s hard to win if you run out.) All chili must be cooked at the Cowboys and Cornbread event in your space. Food prep such as chopping and dicing and salsa making may be done off-site, however.
Be ready to put your chili to the tasting test by 11:30 a.m.
Entry fees for each chili entered are $20 and for salsa $10. Entries can be made payable to El Dorado Country Chamber of Commerce online at cowboysandcornbread.com, in person at 542 Main St. or by phone at 621-5885.
All proceeds go to support the programs of the El Dorado County Visitors Authority and the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce.
