In a press release issued on Oct. 12, the El Dorado Union High School District announced it had reached an agreement with the owners of Ammo Depot regarding advertising on the stadium scoreboard at Ponderosa High School.
The new sign will feature the name of the company as well as a secondary message that reads “Safety Training and CCW Courses.” According to the press release, “both parties are satisfied that the modified sign is both appropriate to post in a school stadium and of value to the advertiser. District officials appreciate the willingness of the owners of Ammo Depot to collaborate in designing an appropriate sign.”
The sign is in the process of being constructed and will be attached when finished. The press release noted that, “as part of the agreement, the owners of Ammo Depot have first rights to continue advertising in coordination with The Bruin Den and site administration.”
However, late Friday afternoon an employee with Ammo Depot said they were unaware of the press release and negotiations were continuing.
The original sign was turned around almost two months ago after a controversy erupted regarding the sign’s presence on the stadium scoreboard. Ammo Depot said Ponderosa Bruin Den, a volunteer group that does fundraising for the school’s football program, had previously approved, manufactured, and mounted the sign.
However, school officials considered the sign inappropriate, primarily because it depicted bullet holes, and ordered it be turned around. Since then, negotiations have been going on between school officials and the owners of Ammo Depot on how best to resolve the dispute.
