A two-car collision on Highway 193 in Greenwood resulted in a fatality Thursday afternoon.
The collision took place 3:43 p.m. just north of Zdolsek Place, said CHP Officer Dan Stark. A 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck was being driven southbound on SR 193 at about 55 or 60 mph by Corrine Hegarty, 49, of Auburn, when the truck passed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, Stark said.
The truck hit a 2005 Dodge Neon driven at an undetermined speed by Rhonda Phillips, 49, of Cool, Stark said. Neither car had time to brake. Both cars came to a rest on the east shoulder about 70 feet away from the initial collision.
Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene while Hegarty sustained major injuries, Stark said. Hegarty was taken by Cal Star helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
“We have reason to believe there was a tire failure on the Ford,” Stark said. “There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.”

I too have to agree with the family and please remove the article and most importantly the picture. The family does not need to see these. My sons and I approached the accident just seconds after it happened. These are images I haven't been able to get out of my mind. Our thoughts and prayers to the family.

come on, mt. democrat. there is no reason to display the collision, particularly within the VERY public forum that is your (online) paper. to continue to do so, in light of the family's recent requests, is highly insensitive. as a longtime neighbor and friend of the phillips family, it is very upsetting to find this tremendous tragedy treated in such an inconsiderate manner. in this time of sorrow and healing, please spare the phillips family the added grief of this image being on the internet. out of respect for everyone involved!
