Folsom Lake College will celebrate the grand opening of its athletics complex on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with a series of events that includes the athletics complex ribbon cutting, the groundbreaking for a new gymnasium and, finally, the college’s inaugural home athletic event when the women’s soccer team takes on West Hills Community College.

“Folsom Lake College is excited to open the first phase of the athletic facilities complex, providing students with new track and field, baseball, softball and soccer fields,” said Folsom Lake College President Rachel Rosenthal. “Community college athletics help build valuable life and job skills, including critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, professionalism and work ethic, communication, leadership and self-direction. I’m proud to say our Falcons soar in all these areas.”

“This will be an exciting day not just for Folsom Lake College and its students, but also for the greater Folsom community that will be invited to share these premier facilities,” added Brian King, chancellor of the Los Rios Community College District. “These new facilities help demonstrate the Los Rios commitment to embracing the ‘community’ in community college, here in Folsom and throughout our four-college district.”

Folsom Lake’s second phase — a cross country course, interpretive trail and a nine-court tennis complex — is slated to open in January 2014, completing the athletics complex. The gymnasium is projected to open in spring 2015. Funding for the physical education and athletics fields construction is provided by the support of the Los Rios Community College District’s taxpayers from the passage of bond Measure M in 2008.

The athletics complex ribbon cutting is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., followed immediately by the gymnasium groundbreaking; the soccer game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free to all grand opening events. A map to the campus can be found at flc.losrios.edu — just click on “Maps” at the top of the home page and then “Main Folsom Campus.” Those interested in philanthropic opportunities associated with Folsom Lake College athletics can contact Sally Howard at 916-608-6643 or howards@flc.losrios.edu.
