A head-on collision left one woman dead on Pony Express Trail Thursday night.
The collision happened at 10:14 p.m., just east of Camino, CHP Officer Dan Stark said.
Joshuah McCavitt, 31, of Lotus, had been driving his 1999 Chevy Silverado westbound on Pony Express Trail when he “failed to navigate a curve,” Stark said. “He crossed the yellow line into the path of” Denise Caldwell, 50, of Camino, driving a 2012 Suburu Legacy eastbound on Pony Express.
The head-on collision overturned both cars, with both coming to a rest on their roofs. Caldwell, Stark said, sustained “fatal injuries at the scene.”
Stark said that McCavitt was subsequently arrested on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.

This is a fine example of why people should not drink and drive. This wonderful, innocent, caring, sweet lady lost her life to a drunk driver and now has been taken from her husband, son and family. As her co-worker I have admired her thoughtful and caring way with the children she serviced and know that she has touched all of our hearts in some way and will be sadly missed.

Denise has touched so many lives, and the children whom she worked so diligently with and with such caring and compassion will never be forgotten. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of Denise. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I am hoping faith will help and sustain you through your grief and sadness. Be encouraged and know that God holds her in his arms and peace is her covering and that one day you will see her & hug her again. God bless you.

I would like to say that I am very saddened by the loss of a great Occupational Therapsit that I have worked with for several years. She was very dedicated to her work and the children she interacted with. I would like to send strength and support to her husband and son at this time.

Denise, so sorry you have to pay the consequence for another's extreme irresponsibility. She was very devoted to her work as an OT, and was a very positive asset on our staff. We all send our respects and regards to her loving husband and son.

I did not know Denise but as a fellow upper Camino resident (we live off Mace/Pony Express Trail) whose family travels this very route, I am saddened this poor woman and her family had to pay the ultimate price for another person's bad judgement. Prayers to her husband and son. I would appreciate the Mt. Democrat following up on this story so that we know that justice is served.

Our sweet and caring Denise who loved her son and husband so much was GREATLY missed at work today. Multiple staff and families called to ask where their favorite Occupational Therapist was, and when she would return; my heart broke with each response. I celebrate Denise through each student and staff member she touched with her loving heart and professional skill. I celebrate the love she gave and shared with her exceptional family. My heart cries with the world's loss of such a beautiful soul and smiles with many tender memories of Denise's love and care for others...

Is this a coincidence or is this the same Joshua McCavitt that was arrested 8/7 on drug dealing charges? I worked closely with Denise for several years at Shriners. An amazingly passionate, talented and loving human being who accomplished so much in her 50 years. What a tragic waste of a beautiful life at someone's irresponsible hands. She made a difference in a huge number of people's lives, those of us that knew her have all learned many lessons from her. Her spirit will live on, she will always be a force to be reckoned with.

I am just incredibly sad about the tragedy that ended Denise's life on earth. As a co-worker and as a parent of a child who received her exceptional services as an occupational therapist, I am deeply saddened. Denise loved her job working with students. She was the best when it came to hand therapy! To her husband and son, know that she talked of you frequently and loved you even more!!

I am so saddened by this news. Denise has helped my son over the past three years and was a truly wonderful and caring person. She was passionate about what she did and always put the kids first. She will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences goes out to her husband and son...who she forever talked about with love and affection.

My heart just broke when I heard this tragic news. Denise was such a wonderful person and OT. My daughter loved going to OT with Mrs. Denise. She was so dedicated to her students. It's so unfair that we lose such a beautiful person to such a selfish irresponsible act of another. My prayers go out to her husband, son, Suki, and coworkers. I hope the happy memories of Denise will help ease your grief.

Denise was a kind soul who loved her work. She had a sweet nature, a gentle and kind voice, and a willingness to help in whatever way she could. I appreciated her interest in my students and her devotion to her clientele. We are in shock that she is gone. We will miss everything about her.
