The power of sunflowers is being harnessed this weekend to help those battling cancer.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, a fundraising event will be held in the back yard of Nancy Siegler with the main attraction being a tour of her extensive garden of showy sunflowers. Proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society in Sacramento.
Guests will have a chance to wander through a field of close to 50 varieties of sunflowers covering a wide spectrum of color combinations. Some varieties top 16 feet in height and with 500 of them to look at, there is no shortage of plants to admire.
Besides the chance to enjoy these showy flowers, there will be music on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. courtesy of a Blue Grass/Western band. They will hold a raffle of different items, including one of Sigler’s paintings. A book of Siegler’s sunflower paintings and photographs will also be on sale. Siegler said they hope to raise $5,000 from the event.
Siegler said this is her third year for doing the fundraiser. A cancer survivor herself, she decided to hold the event three years ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I was a little overwhelmed by it,” she said, “and needed to stay busy. My grandmother grew sunflowers. So I started ordering seeds from all over the country.”
She said she almost didn’t hold the event this year after the death of her husband in January, but decided to go ahead anyway despite her loss.
“I believe in the power of sunflowers,” she said. “It’s amazing how people feel good about coming here. They wander around the flowers and say, ‘I didn’t know they got that tall’ or ‘I didn’t know they came in that color.’ People care because of how they look and how they make people feel.”
The event this Friday, Saturday and Sunday goes from 10 to 6 p.m. each day. Children are welcome, but people are asked to please leave their dogs at home. Siegler’s home is at 3340 Lariat Drive. To gain entrance into Cameron Estates, use the password #PINK. The cost for the event is a $5 donation.
