The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Mental Health Division, is partnering with Green Valley Community Church in Placerville to host an important community training series for members of the public entitled “Mental Health First-Aid.”
The free training will arm the public with skills to help people who are exhibiting signs of mental health problems or may be experiencing mental health crises.
“This training has been a huge success in the communities where we have provided it,” said Sophie Cabrera, program manager with the El Dorado County Mental Health Division. “The clinical and qualitative evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness, and improves the outcomes for people experiencing these illnesses.”
Studies show that nearly one in five individuals in California report needing help with a mental or emotional health problem. According to Cabrera, there should be no shame associated with seeking help. “Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing,” said Cabrera. “Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by getting help.”
The Mental Health First-Aid training series will begin in September and be conducted on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at the Green Valley Community Church, at 3500 Missouri Flat Rd. in Placerville, in Room 303. I saw the offer of classes in The Sacramento Bee and would like to sign up. The classes are on Tuesdays, but the article didn't state how many classes there would be in total. Please let me know the number of classes. Thanks!
