A man died of a heart attack while taking a class on the river near Highway 49 behind Mother Lode River Center in Lotus.

The man, later identified as Anthony Servin, 49, of Elk Grove, was taking an unspecified class on the river — possibly kayaking — around 2:30 p.m. on May 11, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Becker. The man was floating and moaning, Becker said, when he was taken out of the river and administered CPR on the bank behind 6280 Highway 49.

El Dorado County Fire arrived while the male was “under bystander CPR at the river’s edge,” said Battalion Chief Mike Pott. It took over and connected its Automatic External Defibrillator to the patient, shocking him several times. Cal Fire and Medic 25 arrived, providing advanced life support. Servin was transported to Marshall Hospital while still under CPR.

Servin was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
