SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team members arrested two people earlier this month after discovering more than 2 ounces of heroin at an Al Tahoe neighborhood home.

After receiving information about drug activity at 3113 Fresno Ave., narcotics team members served a search warrant at the home May 11, said Task Force Commander Jeff Catchings last week.

When team members arrived, resident Alberto Vierboom, 36, allegedly tried to flee through a back window, but was ordered back inside the residence. Once back inside the home Vierboom continued to struggle with narcotics team members, Catchings said.

Vierboom wrestled with narcotics team members on the floor among numerous hypodermic needles, Catchings said.

“Luckily no one got stuck, but it was gross,” Catchings said.

About 30 needles were recovered from one bedroom of the home, which was a well known spot among area heroin users, Catchings added.

During a subsequent search of the home, SLEDNET team members discovered 73.3 grams of heroin worth about $11,000. The weight equals about 2,300 individuals hits, Catchings said.

The amount of heroin found was the most in recent memory and indicates a rise in heroin use at the South Shore, Catchings said.

Vierboom was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, obstructing police, and maintaining a location for unlawful activities.

Another resident of the home, Heidi Kanes, 30, was arrested on suspicion of maintaining a location for unlawful activities.

Both Vierboom and Kanes remained in custody at El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe Thursday afternoon, according to county records.

It’s unknown if Vierboom has an attorney.

Kanes’ attorney, Paul Palant, did not immediately return a request for comment Thursday.
