The El Dorado Second Sight – Paws for the Blind Puppy Raising Club recently welcomed a new puppy from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Sydney Gardner is raising Partner, a male golden retriever born on March 9 in New York and picked up on May 7 in San Rafael. Partner traveled all the way from New York’s Guiding Eyes for the Blind to start his puppy raising with Guide Dogs for the Blind here in California.
This is Sydney’s fifth guide dog puppy that she will be raising. Her current pup, Carrie, was returned to Guide Dogs for the Blind San Rafael campus on June 9 to begin her formal training.
At approximately 8 weeks old, the puppies are picked up from the organization’s headquarters in San Rafael. They embark on a journey to meet their new puppy raising families, who will raise them for the next 14 to 18 months. The puppy raisers teach the dogs to have excellent house manners and socialize them to the world by introducing them to new people, places and experiences.
Raisers then return their dogs to Guide Dogs for the Blind for several months of formal training. The dogs are then matched with blind students enrolled in the in-residence training.
